Be this a succession fort?

If so, YAR. *raises hand*

May I request a map with magma and an underground river?

And how are you the biggest loser in the history of DF? Losing is fun.

Surroundings: Okay.  "Wilderness" probably won't give you TOO much trouble with wild animals.
Available Water: Good.
Available Soil: Bad.  You might have to irrigate to get farmland.
Available Trees: Bad.  No trees!
Minerals: Good.  Andesite and Gabbro have good minerals.
Available Flux: Bad.  Well, Flux isn't THAT important, certainly not at the start.
Volcano: Good.  (At least, I think magma is good...)

If you check the different biomes with F1, F2 and F3, you might see other stuff.  Of course, it looks like you have "Mountains" and "Desert Badlands", so you're probably not going to have many trees.  But you might have soil (or sand, which can be farmed), so that would be good.

Bottom line, if you can irrigate some farmland (without flooding your fortress) you'll do okay.  The big problem is the lack of trees.

But they never would have given up either. And compared to sitting around in this prison for the rest of my life? Losing is fun.

I say bring seven logs, that way you won't get early tantrums related to the lack of beds for your original seven.

Ya only need four. You get 3 by destroying your wagon. But I suppose you want to use that for bins.

17, there's probably a good chance you won't get too many logs in trading caravans and I've found that the first migrant wave is usually about 7-11 dwarves. So 7 for a quick barracks at the beginning, then 13 for individual rooms once things have progressed that far (hopefully before you first year is out).

No trees?

I'll take a woodcutter/carpenter then.

Name him...Woody.

Sounds fun.

But let's shoot for 13 times.

...If you really won't accept a woodcutter (FOR SOME ABSURD REASON) then make him an axedwarf. THE FORT'S SOLE PROTECTION.
