A Certain Style Of Comic
« on: February 24, 2010, 12:44:36 am »

I'm looking for a certain style of comic, or book, or anything really, as the title suggests. They're hard to describe, but I guess you could call them... some sort of mix between melancholy, poignant, I guess... sort of heartwarming? Here are some examples.
Spoiler: Dinosaur Comics (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Calvin & Hobbes (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: House (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: XKCD (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Futurama (click to show/hide)
Where can I find media with these sort of themes?

Uh.
I sort of meant something a little more meaty. Like comics, they last days and days if they have a good archive.

The ending to Life on Mars made me depressed.

Good-depressed or bad-depressed?
Good-depressed is like the end of the Hitchhiker's trilogy; bad-depressed is like losing all your money in the stock market.

I have these songs, they are in Japanese, but they have decent subs so it's OK. I think this is exactly what you're asking for.

"A fake Diva"(Turn Captions on!)

"Heart" (there's another parot out there, if you like this) The message at the end is very blurry, so I'll just put it here in spoilers. I don't remember how it went exactly but these subs are accurate.

Because dwarves are goddamned crazy.
So, basically, it is just a matter of luck whether you live or suffer horrible death... sounds like dwarf fortress.

Good depressed. You should watch it. It's only 16 episodes, each an hour long.

Hmmm, interesting.

Ansrit, I was thinking more along the lines of a story-based medium, like films, TV shows, books, etc.

I wouldn't say it was totally depressing.  Still kinda odd though.

Sad and sweet? I know I know one, but... shit it's on the tip of my tongue.

Find the tvtropes page for this and crawl the webcomics list there?

Seriously, I didn't even think of that, but that would be an amazing resource...
Which page would that be?

I can't find it. Fry's dog is under "Crowning Moment Of Heartwarming", but that's not quite right. I've been trying different word combination, but the problem with TV tropes is that the article titles aren't always literal or direct (such as "and zoidberg") and you have to know what the page is or what media has it to track it down.

Good luck. It may not even have a page on this.
