What the fuck are you DOING?  Seriously.  You were starving yourself, you want to study 18 hours a day, you are talking about some weird relationship between food and study hours, what the hell is going on in your life?  What can 18 hours a day of study possibly gain you?

And starving is a relative term. I'm a guy and I can live on 1000kCal a day for long periods, and I have when I was still studying.

I know it's easy to judge people on the internet, but please show some respect to other peoples choices in life. We might return the favour.

I was intentionally starving myself (a year ago or so) due to severe depression.  I stopped that around when I stopped being depressed, after having been mildly/moderately depressed off and on for perhaps 15+ years.  I eat when I'm hungry, and nothing more or less.  If you want to hear a more definitive answer for "Vector isn't anorexic," I'm 5'3.5" and weigh around 110-115 pounds or so.  I'm not starving myself.

I am, however, making a serious attempt at becoming a mathematician.  Do you have any comprehension of the kind of work it takes to get there?  It's generally "14 hours or more a day, every day, for 10-15 years."  It's not like econ or music or somesuch.  You're not an expert after 10,000 hours of work.  It's more like 80,000.

So, what the hell is going on in my life?  I've got a shot at greatness, and if to you that looks like insanity, then so be it.  I'm asking for opinionata on food to eat, not "can Vector fulfill her dreams or not."

Or, if you want to put another point on it: mathematics is my obsession.  When I obsess, I typically do the same thing for 12-14 hours with few breaks, ever since I was a little girl.  The only problem is that math takes more energy than other things.  Wanting to study that long isn't a matter of some sick desire to hurt myself.  It's a matter of love.  This is what I love.  It's what I really want to do--everything else feels like a waste of time.  It's what I live for.

If you have other objections, feel free to raise them... but for now, I'm off to the library.

Have you tried hummus? It is pretty filling and quite tasty and can be eaten slowly.

Right, I asked the expert (medical/clinical nutritionist/dietician (don't know the correct English term)).

The expert in question in return wanted:
1. To know why I am talking to females on the internet and
2. Making sure that the female in question knows that it's my girlfriend who gave this advice and
3. Me to know that no, she is not jealous at all.

The advice:
Fibres and fat both slow down the rate in which your stomach empties itself. Whole-wheat products, fruit and vegetables (which contain the most fibre) also have the added benefit of being nutricious. Being hungry usually means your body is lacking nutrition, so eating nutrient-rich food should quench that hunger, and the fibres and fat (vegetable oils and fish are better than animal fat) should keep you "filled" longer.

Disclaimer (medical people and their disclaimers...): This is just "general" advice, it all depends on your current diet, and consulting a dietician may be wise, especially if you're undernourished (your starvation period may have caused undernourishment). Undernourishment is independent of your weight, and means that your body lacks certain specific foodstuffs, such as vitamins, minerals, fibres.

Proteins fill you up. Since you're a picky eater vegetarian and hopefully not stupid a vegan, you should eat eggs and cheese and stuff. I think certain pulses and nuts also contain protein.

My advice on this is lentils. Surprising high calory count, and protien. Other sources of protien include soy beans, beans in general. How is your current eating plan? If you don't get the right amount of nutrients, you will always crave food.

Last but not least, make sure you take the right nutritional suppliments. This is very important when living a vegetarian life, and you will want to look out for the B vitamans speciffically, especiallly since B12 can only be found naturally in fish guts and algae.

Proteins fill up quickly, but pass quickly as well. Vega proteins are mostly found in soy and fungi. Too much protein can induce ketosis though, but as a vegetarian you'll probably won't reach that limit. A balanced diet is more important than plain calories.

Damn it, this thread is making me hungry. Though, to quote one of my friends, "[I'm] always hungry."

I think I need to spring for the bread and hummus plan. I'm living in a dorm with no cooking options and... yeah. Downing a 900 kcal can of Pringles to focus on a paper = not healthy, and constantly losing weight = not fun.

As for actual relevant advice:
Rice.  It's cheap, comes in large quantities, and is easy to make if you have a rice cooker.  You can probably get a cheap one of those for under $30.  Only problem is it usually takes something like 15-20 minutes to cook.  To be healthy, eat brown rice.  For protein, add an egg on top, or possibly chicken.  Change out what sauce you use (if any) to keep the food interesting.  If you're feeling special, fry up some vegetables like celery and carrots with your sauce and chicken to top the rice.

This. So much this. This is what I would be living on if rice cookers weren't somehow deemed a "fire hazard" for the dorms.

Yup, 81kg and 180cm is kinda chubby. 54kg and 2m, on the other hand, is beyond thin territory and well into dead territory.
