Food for the perpetually hungry
« on: February 24, 2010, 12:42:40 am »

I discovered that I'm about to increase my daily burned calories by 1176 kcal (already have increased it 800kcal, and rising every day).  So.  What do I eat so I can stop feeling like I'm about to die every three hours or so?

For reference, that's roughly doubling what I normally burn.  Additionally, I'm a vegetarian.

Rice.  It's cheap, comes in large quantities, and is easy to make if you have a rice cooker.  You can probably get a cheap one of those for under $30.  Only problem is it usually takes something like 15-20 minutes to cook.  To be healthy, eat brown rice.  For protein, add an egg on top, or possibly chicken.  Change out what sauce you use (if any) to keep the food interesting.  If you're feeling special, fry up some vegetables like celery and carrots with your sauce and chicken to top the rice.

That, pizza, and grilled cheese=my diet.

Also, I can't imagine what type of lifestyle you had if you were only burning 1200 Cal.  An average person will get around that just sitting all day.

1. I'm female, and around 5'3"
2. I'm a math student

Do the computations: tiny person sitting around all day ._.  Though honestly, I do have some exercise classes, run up the stairs, and so on.  Hm... might have forgotten to adjust for the exercise, too.

If 1176 is roughly doubling what you ate before, presumably you eat about 1176 kcal per day now. If you've already raised it by 800 kcal, does that mean that previously you ate about 300 kcal per day? That seems like you'd starve.

No, no.

Back when I was starving myself, I ate 800 or so.  Currently, I'm eating something like 1200-1400.  My required kcal has increased by 800 already (hello, hunger-every-three-hours) due to an increase in concentrated study to 9 hours (wasn't really focusing before.  Now I am).  Since the goal is 14-18 hours of study a day, I have realized that I suddenly need to eat a hell of a lot more.

Hence the sitting about here and asking you questions.

Quinoa is a (almost) grain with protein.
14% protein in fact.
Cooks just about the same as rice, if I remember correctly.

Hm, pretty good.  Somehow, I have gotten hungry again... pfaugh.  I've been eating like a pig all day, and I'm still hungry.  This is ridiculous.

Anyway, thanks for the advice, dudes!

You're lucky.
I've been studying and exercising more, but have steadily gotten less hungry and been eating less.
To the point where I can get by on just a large bowl of cereal and coffee.

Wow, that's incredible.  I used to be like that, but then suddenly I started solving problems all day and WHAM!  Got to eat every three hours or I feel like I'm going to faint, and suddenly I'm thirstier, too.  Well, okay.  I also stopped being depressed, which was the thing that kept me from eating.

Now, I just need to go sleep so I can get up and get some kind of calories in me.  I'm going to try substituting whole milk for skim first, as well as adding cheese to the tomato and cream cheese on my lunch bagel(s).  I'll let y'all know how it goes, in case there's anyone else in similar straits.

Let me know if you have any more advice, 'kay?

Haha!

Oww. Cutests thread!

I am a vegetarian too. I weigh now about 66,6 kilos. I attended "hell" for 1,3 years and lured myself into eating more weight with a personal trainer. Today, my condition is red lights and can't pull myself together (still can't lift my own weight)

I don't have headaches. Except yesterday but that was because of a blown up recipe test. Heard cusses about how much work it was to even clean the frying pan after I had cleaned it twice myself. The stuff seemed to regenerate itself on the surface of the pan. Dunno.

Eggs aren't a very good source of calories. They're unhealthy in large amounts. Seriously, I just consume canola oil and high protein vegetarian products like soy and amaranth. I can bake simple amaranth power cookies, much like "coke" in dwarf fortress ;) by combining honey and something on the frying pan. The taste is powerful and it's pretty hard and feels pretty hardcore :D. Amaranth is the solution to feeding the hungry in the world.

Try various stews, they tend to be quite filling. Two bowls of bean stew were enough to keep me full for four or five hours when I was working in construction (burned like 3-4k kcal per day).

Oh, and 5'11" isn't just under two meters. Two meters are 6'7".

Heh, I wouldn't say that 8" are "a bit" when it comes to human height, but suit yourself.

Eat what you need. Your brain wants sugar. If you're feeling more hungry because you use your brain more, try fructose tablets or better yet, real fruit.

For pure calories, fat and sugar are your friends. Or enemies, depending on whether you want to gain or lose.
