Meh, at least I strive for proper English even when using ridiculous combinations of various symbols to create a very confusing string of what appears to be nonsense but is, in fact, a proper sentence. Or something.

Any of you Grammar Nazis? Because I definitely am.

I just hate when people use leetspeek/n00bspeak/sms style typing when your talking. It makes them seem like they have down, :.

Ie....

"omg r u lvl 30? Wut r u talkin about? lol noob."

Quote
Are any of you excessively picky when it comes to grammatical errors?

It frustrates me when people use so-called leetspeak, chatspeak or sms-style typing when writing, it makes them appear to have a mental handicap.

An example:
"omg r u lvl 30? Wut r u talkin about? lol noob."

It's difficult to 'hate' an intangible thing, or an inanimate object.

Removing copulae from the beginning of a sentence, while not technically incorrect, is an irritating trend I'm seeing more and more these days. I'm not sure if Mass Effect 2 had any copulae to begin its sentences.

The state of 'having downs' is not grammatically sound, and you managed to spell it incorrectly anyway.

Come to think of it, 'Grammar Nazi' isn't really a valid class membership so that's gone, as well.

This concludes my overly picky post for no reason other than because 'Grammar Nazis' who have no idea what they're on about are more annoying than anyone who types in an accepted shorthand form of English.

I'm not much of a Grammar Nazi really, but I will make comment when a post is so badly typed, or especially several posts by the same person, that it becomes hard to understand.  Spelling may not equate intelligence, but it is an indicator of whether you care about what you're writing.

If you're not going to give enough of a damn to properly type and spell something, which is a minuscule effort by any measure, then I'm not going to give enough of a damn to pay attention to you.

I try not to be a grammar nazi, I just get slightly annoyed when someone makes a request in a very vague way and expects me to understand.  I also have a friend who types like the following, the context is related to a game he and I are slowly but surely working on:

good ideas
and I told you the random super monsters that will take teams to take donw if some one solos it it will send up a warning and we will look at the log this will also prevent hacked items
I will have a freind of mine consetently trying to hack our server on perpous and if he succseds he will tell me how he did it the i will fix it

Although my friend here may just need remedial courses in spelling, or typing.

:\

It is somewhat ironic that you hate chatspeak so much, yet you end a sentence with a "smiley".

It's difficult to 'hate' an intangible thing, or an inanimate object.

This statement is absurd. It is not difficult in the least to hate a mode of behavior, an idea, a culture or subculture. These are all intangible, and the sort of things that this conversation is about.

Thus ends my overly critical nitpicking of nitpickers.

I like this one from the Wiki:

"Wouldn't the sentence "I want to put a hyphen between the words Fish and And and And and Chips in my Fish-And-Chips sign" have been clearer if quotation marks had been placed before Fish, and between Fish and and, and and and And, and And and and, and and and And, and And and and, and and and Chips, as well as after Chips?"

Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo.

Grammatically correct sentence,

how

This.

I couldn't get through the wikipedia article without spitting out the water I was drinking. Something about seeing the word "Buffalo" that many times just makes me bust a gut.

Anyway, being a grammar nazi is dumb because it depends on you having a definition of "correct usage" that you hold everyone else to, but in fact all definitions of "correct" usage are entirely arbitrary and basically pulled out of someone's ass. The only way to determine truly "correct" usage is to observe how people actually use the language, and that is always different from how people with their panties in a twist think they should use the language.

Ermmm... no.

There is a 'correct usage' of grammar. We are not talking about how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Some people put the peanut butter on first, some put the jelly on first, each think they are 'correct' and the 'correct' way can vary based on who you ask... but with grammar there is only one way. Sorry to burst your bubble.

I have very little problem with someone using incorrect grammar in general. What gets my goat is when people fail to capitalize properly, mostly due to a few quirks of my education.

Otherwise, feel free to be as grammatically incorrect as you want, as long as I can actually understand what you are saying.

Doing it informally isn't a horrible thing, but if you can't pull it together long enough to write an academic paper, there's a problem.

I'm an even more serious Grammar Nazi outside the internet. Raging about grammar is very rarely useful on the internet, although I do admit that I take a degree of pleasure in correcting the incoherent garbage that certain people tend to spout.
In real life I tend towards mercilessness.

I'm not a Grammar Nazi but for being one you have a mistake in your text.

Persons, such a word is not used to talk about a large amount of people. People is the right one.

My only weakness is that some words sound better than others when you write them down. I'm only human dammit!
