People who voted for physics: what are you expecting to hear about?

I'm concerned that a vote with such ambiguous topics is a recipe for disappointment, since the actual discussion will (presumably) focus on a few narrow applications of each science.  The inclusion of joke topics like podiatry and pogonology can't help either.

Well obviously they are expecting to hear EXACTLY what they want to hear :D

Physics (to make a functional and accurate dwarf-a-pult)
Chemistry (so the above can somehow work in an explosion. Ideally at the point of landing AND the point of launch)
Mathematics (So the explosion turns the enemy into half-baked pi. Math the DWARVEN WAY!)

I think the topics are an opportunity to:

-Describe how these sciences appear in DF now
-How Toady would ideally like these sciences to be abstracted in DF
-How these sciences will definitely appear in future versions of DF

Psych, Sociology and Genetics all relate to our dwarves, how they will behave and how they're generated. Physics will relate to the stuff some people don't already know...and will probably be a chance for Toady to describe the hurdles involved in doing super accurate cave-ins.

Consider this to be a write in vote for Scientology.

I chose Physics, Chemistry and Genetics, but Math came in a very close fourth. But I hope that these will all be discussed on future DF Talks.

Last time I saw it was this for the top three:
Pysch and Sociology
Chemistry
Physics

Now that linguistics has been added, I'l like to change 1 vote from Physics to Linguistics.  Would that it were possible.

Why I voted physics? I wanted to hear about gravity, flight, and then more about the new combat mechanics with material interactions, as well as structural integrity and cave ins put back into the code. I wanted to know how Toady would handle that.

My other votes were 1) ecology-- we know enough about individual animals (zoology) so now I want to know more about animal INTERACTIONS. And 2) Psychology-- I definitely want to hear Toady's thoughts about how to improve the thought system. Admiring artwork shouldn't be able to counter-act death and mourning so easily, for instance.

But I'd still prefer to hear about Toady's plans for implementing languages to a higher degree, and about his threatened poetry/novel generator.

I kinda want a poetry/novel generator.

Yea, I was like 'why's that there?' when I saw podiatry :P

While we did go through a bunch of physics disucssion (mostly relativity and some quantum) in the future of the fort section, I get what you mean. Still, theres quite a bit of pysics going on in the game such as fluid physics (the fluid simulation) and some people already posted their thought on that question.

Psychology/Sociology seemed a bit wierd, but that could be about the traits and stuff.

You should be able to change your votes now.

I'm not sure how many of the topics we are going to cover in a single df talk, because it will also depend on how much we non-experts can think of to talk about.  All of the topics are somewhat vague, so I think we'll find your comments about what you are actually voting for when you pick something very helpful.

I voted for astronomy, physics, and meteorology.

I'd like to hear if there are any plans for disasters such as hurricanes, volcano eruptions, earthquakes, meteor strikes, etc, and if dwarves would be able to predict them with science - or call them down on their foes with magic (seeing as the odds of causing a hurricane or meteor strike through dwarven science are slim to none :P).

As for physics, that was a stand-in vote for wanting to know more about future plans for mechanisms, computing, and power. For example, whether there may be a new device which acts as a power sensor, sending a OFF/ON signal to mechanisms when it loses power or regains it (to avoid having to use pumps and water in mechanical logic gates). Or, whether there are plans for other power sources (such as ones that use magma to boil water).

So, is economics a science? I'd like to have at least some hope for something more practicable than "forge 60000 coins to settle accounts"...
I've had this discussion with a physicist who turned around and got a doctorate in economics. Economics is a science according to economists, not according to the definition of the scientific method. But that would also exclude mathematics and pogonology. Actually, I believe linguistics also gets relegated to an area of scholastic research. But then again I'm not sure what the science talk entails. Is it about the scientific basis of DF design or how the sciences will manifest in the game. I mean does astronomy mean that there will be dwarf soothsayers or is it for calendars or what?

In the interest of full disclosure I chose astronomy partially to see what was up with it and partially for the same Lovecraftian mindset earlier expressed. I picked psychology because I'd really like to see more done with dwarven personalities and I figured to get Toady thinking more in that direction. Lastly I picked mathematics mostly because I'm doing so much of the damn stuff right now, but it also leads to siege engines, massive machinery, etc.

Physics, Astronomy and Mathematics.

I _really_ want to know what there is to say about mathematics in this context,.
