Great news - looks great, uses Webkit, yay!
Bad news - buggy - I can not see any menu items and only page that displays is "Games".

Awesome but I will wait for stable...

For Steam games, do you still need Dosbox or older drivers to run some of the games?

The new UI won't make any changes to that. If a game bought through steam needs dosbox to run it will generally be included and installed when you download the game, eg the xcom games come with dosbox already set up and configured to run.

The new UI seems pretty nice from what I can tell. I only wonder why they made it so the font color changes so much, seemingly at random. Can't I just keep the blue or the green? They both look nice, but alternating between them after each mouse click just seems odd. Also, the "list" view doesn't have little icons next to the games anymore, but rather a large icon. It would be nice to be able to toggle them, since I like to be able to see a bunch without having to scroll...

But yeah, give it a try if you wish, you don't even have to visit the link in the first post. All you need to do is go to steam settings, account, then in the middle it will say there's one beta available. "CHANGE" it to the UI beta and it will restart steam for you, then it will work =)

One of the devs at Wolfire said when he activated the beta it made his Chrome crash, but i didn't seem to have that problem...

EDIT: Oh yes, they removed the buttons in the bottom pane, so now it will take a few mouse clicks extra to get to your friends list and such.

Oh and for the apple/microsoft rage... microsoft sells software for outragous prices and the software sucks. Apple sells hardware with great software as an incentive, but the hardware is wayyy overpriced and the mouse for the macs make me want to kill myself.

Fixed. As far as I'm concerned ms is just a bigger apple. I use stuff from both of them but that doesn't mean I like either :)

But anyway back on topic I found the steam update to run really really slowly and use a whole core of my cpu all the time. It also seemed to kill the redraw for other apps on my system as well. This might be cause it's a work machine so probably has a shoddy gfx card but even so I wouldn't expect it.

Had to go back to the non-beta for now.

Steam seems to have had that problem intermittently for me with or without the beta for a while now. Every so often its maxing a core (like once or twice a week). Restarting Steam fixes it. Seems very much like a memory leak, only with the processor.... *shrugs*

Now remember folks, when you click his link above, make sure your browser says "http://store.steampowered.com/uiupdate/" in the address bar. If it says "http://store.steampowered.thiswebsiteisphony.com/uiupdate/" you may want to reconsider downloading anything from it...  ::)
This link works fine! I promise;D

Besides the beta forcing a reinstall of several games (luckily I don't own MW2 - everybody seems to have been forced to redownload it, and that's a pain), I haven't had too many major issues. It'll take some getting used, to, though. But hey - if we get some snazzy new features, maybe get some long-term usability benefits, it could be worth the painfully-shocking switch to a brand new UI.  :D

Oh thanks goodness. This is going to be rather awesome.

Hey... this might be a step towards getting Steam on Macs and Linux!  :o
I bet not. I think it's likely that it's just partly to make the Wine users stop whining (oh, punny) about how the Steam client is partially crippled if not run on a system with IE.

I welcome the change. Both of my laptops run Linux, so anything that allows me to do something easier than my previous methods is welcome.

Turns out it may be true after all - there have been mentions on assorted sites that the new interface includes references to OSX when examined up close

Well, that was fun - tried to take advantage of the Steam weekend deal. But the new UI crashed every time I tried to log in to Paypal. Typed in my credentials, hit 'login', and the browser and Steam both flat-out crashed.

And, for the "Mac/Linux" debate... I'd like to make the sobering point that, even if Steam did in fact work on Macs and/or Linux, most games wouldn't. Although no longer requiring IE is a step in the right direction, especially for users running on Wine. Still, I wouldn't get too enthusiastic quite yet.  :-[

They are planning Mac support in the near future. I doubt they will even support Linux though as even the minor changes required to support it would probably not justify the few games there is :(

I would get enthusiastic - if Valve is planning Mac and Linux support, it is also planning cotnracts with developers.
