Over Powered Hunter?
« on: February 23, 2010, 07:39:41 pm »

Hey guys, I'm pretty new to DF, and this is my first "know what I am doing, oh wait I don't" Fortress. Any hows cutting to the point, I have a hunter for my main source of food. Well many hunters but that's not the point. I live in calm surroundings and such and when I looked at the kills of one of my hunters out of interest, I noticed it had two odd kills, or at least one odd kill.

I remember seeing on the wiki that it's powerful, or is that only in adventure mode?
I'm also in a mountain biome.

I'm sure your hunter has a pretty decent marksdwarf skill by now, so nothing should really be able to withstand one or two bolts. Really, nothing looks too out of the ordinary here.

Okay thanks. Also, just wondering, isn't the Giant Eagle and the Sasquatch restricked to savage zones? I mean I'm in calm, this scares me a tad.

The eagle isn't restricted, methinks. The sasquatch may have to do with other factors, I've never seen any myself.

As they stand, marksdwarves (and hunters) are known for being "overpowered" because a single bolt can quite easily pierce the heart and both lungs, or mangle a creature's brain, left ear, right eye, nose and mouth. Large creatures are very dangerous if you have to engage them in melee combat, but there aren't many that can stand up to a barrage (or even just a couple :P) of crossbow bolts.

And yes, sasquatches have the [SAVAGE] tag. Note that your fortress will most likely cover a number of different biomes, so it's perfectly possible that your "Calm" area is just one biome, and there's another biome in the fortress' embark area which is considered Untamed Wilds or perhaps Joyous Wilds. It's not really anything to worry about, to be honest :)

There are three things I know about dwarves:
1. They've got beards. Even the women.
2. They're short. Especially the women.
3. They're Scottish.

Keep that hunter around in-case a titan decides to show up...I hate those things!
