First: Clans are what you make of them. They can be cliques, they can be snobby, they can be collections of annoying fanboys.

Or they can just be that group of people with similar playing interests whom you know you can depend on to host and play games you like.

Second: The WC3 online scene is dead. You're 7 years too late for the good part. It's dominated by mass-spamming asian DotA bots, and it's just crappy. From about 2003 to the release of WoW, it was the best place on the internet. Imagine a gigantic game engine with thousands of features and options available to hundreds of thousands of active players in a completely customizable format. THAT was what made WC3: the custom games. Not that the normal multiplayer wasn't highly entertaining on its own, but the custom games were like crack. There were large numbers of people who literally had a life-harming addiction to that stuff.

Hundreds of user-created games, often complex and in great variety, 24/7. It birthed entire genres (like tower defense). I'm very interested to see if and how SC2 surpasses it. They already have a plan to sort the custom games into different lobbies, completely fixing the dota/spambot problem.

EDIT: Reading that, you'd think I liked WoW or was suggesting it is the new best place in the internet. Quite the opposite. It killed the WC3 online community overnight, ending the gamers' utopia. The spambots killed it a second time after the WoW craze died off and players were coming back.

I hope SC2 has the same level or higher of custom maps. I never could get into the normal multiplayer aspect of WC3. Custom maps are where it's at. The spambots aren't around at all, unless you mean the hosting bots.

Which Wilderness Survival maps?  *The* Wilderness Survival maps?  There were a number of maps that focused on surviving in the wilderness, but I think there was only one series that was specifically called Wilderness Survival.

I got into the WC3 multiplayer scene not that long ago.  I'd avoided it because, well, because I suck at WC3 (and also because I'd had bad experiences with the population of Battle.net, courtesy of Diablo II).  Played a few maps, played a few more, got up to Corporal rank on one of the NotD servers...

And then I moved on to something else.  I'd really quite like to have a crowd of people I know and respect to play WC3 maps with, but I'd also like to know that there are some truly interesting co-op maps out there (not to mention ones that I might actually get good at).

I've never liked clans though.  Not in any game.  There's just something about the whole deal that doesn't sit well with me.

should have read what I said a little better, it was never released, because of blizzards "herp derp" patch that broke the map before release.
there was only a handful of maps which survived that patch.. it basically made all custom maps made before the patch unable to be opened, both for play AND for editing, so I cant even get the work I spent on it back..

I heard that was an attempt to kill DoTA. Apparently, it failed miserably. DoTA spambots were back with a new version in a matter of days.

Dota is the reason they can still sell copies.. They actually worked with Icefrog to make sure that Dota wouldnt die, they delayed the patch so that he could get it all ported for the new version.

Even Valve is interested in DotA. Did you hear about the dealings between Valve and Icefrog? Nobody really knows whats going on exactly, but it's something like a team from Valve is working with him, or that Valve is going to hire Icefrog. While we're on the subject, what would it be like if Valve and Blizzard teamed up?

Also, does anybody remember the "virus map" thing? It was hilarious to see everybody panic about it.

MMMmm, nothing wrong with DotA itself. Of course I played it back when it was just another popular map series. It would be interesting to see what kind of things you could do with the concept of an ongoing battle led by human-controlled heroes in a fantasy setting, and I'd love to see what Valve could do with it.

Considering we've gone roughly a couple pages without comment from the author, I'd say it's fairly deceased.

Pity.  This thing had some real potential.

I have to say I was expecting it to die. The only maps hosted on WC3 nowadays are ones that have been around a while, or ones that are just really really good.

Don't forget, Deon is also a very busy person who works on a few popular mods.
The last time he updated was right before DF2010 came out.

So between the new version, his mods, and the art he does this probably has very little time for his attention.

Not to mention the time life takes out of this stuff.

Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.
Just so I remember
