Oh I do too. It's just that I don't value sedimentary layers as highly as most people seem to, and even when I do have such layers I can never bloody find a SINGLE vein of coal/lignite unless it's actually jutting out of the mountain.

So, wood.

Aah, I see.

Truth be told the only sedimentary layer I'll vouch for is dolomite. Makes for nicely valuable constructions, and when goblins are splattered into them it shows up rather nicely against the white.

Had a fortress in a sandstone layer once and it looked like they were digging a mud fortress =(

Evidently, Dorf Philosopher Uristmedes only figured out the Uristmedes screw. And he ran around naked and covered in water, blood, and vomit all the time, so any discoveries made in his 4/7 bathtub went unnoticed by dorf science.

I use wood for two things: 1) Beds, and 2) Fuel, or Pearlash (depending on whether i have magma and sand). Maybe Wooden Bolts if I have a ridiculous surplus.

So you don't build barrels and bins?

You sir, are a dirty liar!

No smithing. I hoard all the metal I can. I never need anything from trading, so I generally just order up all the metal they've got to offer and smelt everything I have into bars to continue hoarding. I don't forge anything unless it's to fulfill a mandate (not really a military-focused guy). Right now I'm building a palace largely out of iron, which I have about 600 bars of and more every siege, and I keep trying to hoard it... but for what purpose? I'm not using it for anything else.

Oh right. Forgot about them. Bins and Barrels too, then.

I still don't get why it takes three metal bars to forge one. Wonder if there's a way to change that.

The only things I spend metal on are a) arms/armour, and the relevant training, and b) mandates. Otherwise, my industries for trade run on sewing cloth images into goblin/orc armour, ungodly valuable roasts, and heavily decorated stone crafts, and more or less all the home-use materiel is either obsidian from the farm, glass from the magma furnaces, or wood. Otherwise, all metal is kept for moods, mandates, and training crafters.

...useless...   ...useful things...   ...doing other things...   ...don't really see the point...   ...reason...

A metal-working industry could very well be entirely pointless for your style of play. I would venture that if you played DF for the rest of your life and never needed a metalworking industry, there would be nothing intrinsically wrong with that.

Not everything in DF is necessary. Most games have a critical path towards some kind of ultimate goal, and everything you do has some position on that path and gets you closer to the goal.
DF has no critical path, partially because it's an alpha so most features don't exist yet, but even then, the game is basically envisioned as a fantasy-world sandbox where you can do whatever your heart desires.

With that in mind, I have a metalworking industry because I like it. It gives me a little tinge of pleasure whenever I pass over my 14 forges and remember that, while I have no immediate need to work metal, I could work the hell out of that metal if I wanted to. Other than that, no reason.

Maybe in the future you'll find metalworking to be essential to some other goal that you feel like achieving, until then, don't bother.
There's no right way to play DF.

it takes miners to mine out veins which stops me mining into more useful things,
Like what, exactly?

it takes up wood if you can't make coke

it takes up dworfs that could be doing other things like eating and inspecting doors,
So instead of giving dwarves something to do, we want them to be lazy freeloaders?

Your logic is terrible.

I generally have my dwarves digging out areas that are useful or pits to drop enemies into, or have them do their alternate job.  The comment about eating was me trying to be ironic, because they always seem to be eating, but I guess you missed that.

Could probably mod a reaction...

Because it's so amusing to hear stories of the last recruit, pressganged into defending the fortress, making the critical shot that saves all the battle-hardened veterans... then going crazy because the cats have filled the dining room with miasma.

And thats what makes DF much fun.
You don't have to do everything. I personally never worry about a metal industry. I could... but I don't. And nothing makes me need to. The game has plenty of other options that allow me to bypass a metal industry but still reach the same results. But, as you wrote: if I did change my playstyle, or desire some super metal megaproject, then maybe it would make more sense for me to venture into metalworking... but as it stands DF has the depth and versatility to allow me to skip metal working and still have a great experience.

You mean once you have your metal industry going you still make barrels/bins out of wood? Waste. :|

(There is a story behind this. . .)

This is an Alder Omelette. All craftsdwarfship is of highest quality. It is encircled with bands of cheese. It menaces with spikes of bacon, ham, and peppers. On the object is an image of dwarves in egg white. The dwarves are eating.

Waste? Says the man who apparently uses three bars of non-renewable material as opposed to one bar of renewable material?

For shame sir, for shame.

Hurted? Are you 12?

I am 12, and what is this?

Good sir, you have broken the law! You are 12, you must be 13 to be allowed on teh interwebz, now away with you! (oh don't worry, just don't go telling people your age, ever heard of stalkers?)

But on a more on-topic note, I have a reason to use metalworking, CLOWNITE SOCKS!

Only under the very specific conditions that you have access to magma AND a shortage of wood. Even then I prefer wood simply because, as above, THREE metal bars for one bin/barrel is pretty inexcusable.
