Discuss Metal Worker Opinions
« on: February 23, 2010, 07:25:56 am »

I've found the products of a metal industry semi useless, I don't arm my dwarves with metal armor or weapons because I generally just use crossbowmen or elaborate defensive setups, but not anything that can get my dworfs hurted, it takes miners to mine out veins which stops me mining into more useful things, it takes up wood if you can't make coke, it takes up dworfs that could be doing other things like eating and inspecting doors,  I don't really see the point, someone give me a reason to keep a metal industry

He/she was trying to be insulting, ignore it.

For future reference though hurted isn't a word. I would recommend one of the spell checking plugins for whatever browser you use as it should pick up ones like that.

Might be lolcat. Just saying.

The only reason I make weapons is to free goblin parts from their oppressive masters.

Melee dwarves with masterwork steel weapons and armour are a joy to watch as they mow through a goblin siege.
Clownite weapons and armour? Goblins and bits of goblins EVERYWHERE.

The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Considering that's a *chan catchphrase I think Abaddon is aware and equally unconcerned...

Anyway. I gotta say the metal industry is underrated. Of course, I have a couple smiths milling around with artifacts to their names and the associated legendary skill, which I imagine is even more important with metalworking than with any other profession, given the ratio of resources to finished products. (Less so on maps with magma, but mine is not such a map.) The worse your smiths are, the more resources you're going to have to essentially waste to train them up.

And then there's the Dungeon Master, who recently surprised me pleasantly by commandeering responsibility for the production of the silver short swords I intend to re-spec my champion wrestlers to. He made maybe one +silver short sword+ and the rest were no-quality or -well-crafted-. Perfect!

I can't justify using metalcrafters, but metalworkers for weapons and armor can be useful. Admittedly, crossbowmen are pretty much unstoppable gatlin gunners, but it's good to be prepared. Besides, a crossbowman just doesn't produce the same brutal quality of a fight with an axe dwarf cutting off all their limbs before killing them or a hammer dwarf knocking enemies halfway across the map.

Blacksmiths are very useful.  They can make high cost stuff from otherwise useless ores.  Note that the Native <METAL> are more efficiently used by masons.  If you have coal or magma, you don't even have to use wood to make any of the stuff.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

Like what, exactly?

I use wood for two things: 1) Beds, and 2) Fuel, or Pearlash (depending on whether i have magma and sand). Maybe Wooden Bolts if I have a ridiculous surplus.

So instead of giving dwarves something to do, we want them to be lazy freeloaders?

Your logic is terrible.

How else can you decorate your fortress with absurd levels of bling if not for metal workers?

I use custom reactions to allow prospecting metal or gems from ordinary rock. Dwarves are supposed to be master metal workers after all. This gives me an unlimited amount of metal to work with, albeit with a great labor cost.

I usually have 100+ dwarves slaving away in the obsidian mines or smelters producing metal for the few legendary forge lords to work with.

Every piece of masterwork plate armor is decorated with a dozen different types of metals and bone. Even a single gauntlet has an elaborate history of the world and fortress engraved on it in many overlapping metals, such that a single steel gauntlet rivals the value of almost any artifact.

Believe it or not I actually prefer to have my dorfs search constantly for veins of lignite or bit.coal. Then again I'm from Pennsylvania. Cum grano salis, et cetera.

I've also been trying to avoid the ire of the elves until I'm properly ready to dispose of the useless bastards (read: until my railgun's complete), though their liaison seems to have been dead for a while... I guess they won't take offense to over-eager logging if they can't complain to me directly, huh?
