If you wanted a scenic place for a fort...
« on: February 22, 2010, 06:52:16 pm »

Consider Kolakir. You might get a different name for it, but whatever. Just LOOK at this place.

Spoiler: Rather big render (click to show/hide)

It's not the perfect dwarven site - no chasm (66-level drop in a narrow underground waterslide notwithstanding), and the fun is quite a ways off. But the sheer design potential of the place seems quite high. First of all, the highest peak is 111 levels high from ground level. The closely neighboring peaks allow any sort of constructions you might fancy inbetween, and the magmapipe is rather safely walled off until you desire to barge in. There are many trees, and the top soil layer is white sand, so glassworking should be possible. The mountain is primarily gabbro and granite, which doesn't leave much of a steelmaking possibility, but there are enough precious metals and gemstones to get anything you want through trade. In any case, you can try to get a different mineral makeup of the site by using a different history seed.

The worldgen info:

The site is here:

Last but not least, the mountain's lower edge is a straight 3-level rampless wall of rock covered by a thin layer of sand. If you want a 2D-like feel, that's about as close as it gets.

Ah, the glitch where local region says no trees but the embark site actually has some!

You sure it's glitched?  Try swapping biomes and see if it says trees.  Right now it's selecting the moutain which doesn't (Read never) have trees.

Only in dwarven culture is alcohol poisoning a death worthed investigating, while being impaled through several toes, a eye, and a thumb from a spiraling water[3] is not.  Because everyone knows, the only way a dwarf could get alcohol poisoning is if someone put poison into the alcohol.

d16 with dig deeper did produce a very similar world but some features had different placements (the volcano a few blocks to the SE and there was no sand) so it was not such a nice spot to embark on.. trying with d18 now..

Oi, yeah, should've specified. This is 40d16 vanilla, so should theoretically be compatible with the latest variants. Dig Deeper is a major mod, so all bets are off in regards to feature placements.

40d makes the same geography, although with my mods there is no sand.  I, too, disembarked on top of a thin, steep, ridge.  I never did locate the remains of the wagon although my Dwarves were able to collect the contents.

Overall, quite a nice location.  Thank you for sharing this, Sean.   :)

yeah, im pretty sure that the info on the right just says for the space/spaces in the middle of what u have selected.

as soon as i saw the rendering of the site i thought of 2D

Do you mean in the screenshot?  That's only showing the mountain biome's information.  You can switch which biome is displayed with the F# keys.  In this case, there are three of them, so F1-F3.  I genned the site in 40d17 and 40d18 and it came out as it is described here.

Also, your dwarves generally arrive in the biome you are looking at when you embark, so...  you probably should have it on a biome that's not the mountain biome the forest biome, because the shrubland biome puts you way up on the mountain for some reason, too.
