I just hate it when most of a games publicity is its "realistic" graphics.

I don't care, I want to know how its played.

I don't have a silly "limit" on my graphic expectation : I can (and I do) play games whose graphics are outdated, and at the same time I enjoy high-end graphics Crysis-style, because that's beautiful. As we say in my country, "it flatters the retina".

While that's true that graphics shouldn't supersede gameplay, it works both for high-technology 3D engines than for older graphs.

What I can't stand is when people get all elitist about it, like preferring bad graphics somehow makes them superior to people who prefer good graphics.
Well said.

The other day my brother asked me "How can you play something that crap?", in response to me playing dwarf fortress. There are great games with good graphics, and great games with bad graphics, but judging a game by it's graphics feels a lot like... err... Entertainment racism?

I hate how many people seem to judge a book by it's cover... which is really hypocritical of me because I pride myself on my ability to judge books by their covers.

I'll play any game that is good no matter what the graphics, but in general having nice graphics usually improves the game as long as it fits that particular game. My only regret is that there aren't many (good) games using sprite based graphics anymore, because sprites can look really really awesome.

Now my rant. Graphics are a big reason that games don't come filled to the fucking brink with content like DF is. Almost everything added into games needs artwork and that artwork has to be made realistic for some reason. Honestly, if I don't need to see subtle facial expression or awesome limb severings (then use said limbs as weapons) then I don't really care that the people I kill look fucking perfect.

Stylized art is what the industry should be doing. Torchlight is a good example... it looked pretty good and definitely looked awesome while I was beating enemies to death with my mace. They managed to have a very low poly count and it almost worked on a netbook (sorry netbook mode, but you fail).

My main concern about a game is gameplay. Graphics are just an added bonus. I'll play everything from ASCII to sprites to masterfully rendered 3D models, as long as the game itself is fun.

What does annoy me (and has already been mentioned too many times) is when gameplay suffers in the favor of graphics.

Ahh I think I need to clarify my post, when I say poor graphics I mean ugly ones.

I don't consider the ASCII tiles used for DF to be bad graphics, and arguably the last generation of sprite based games look a lot better than even modern 3D games.

A game can look good and use low tech graphics, and a game can look bad and use cutting edge 3d techniques. In my view it's all about the style and how they are handled.

It would take serious effort to make a 3D graphical engine for DF that displays that same volume of information that glancing at the ASCII render does.

As to graphics verse gameplay I don't think anyone here would disagree that a game with bad graphics but is fun is better than a dull eye-candy one (to play, not necessarily to watch or show off to someone). Good graphics can make a good game more fun though.
