Help my migrations have stopped
« on: February 21, 2010, 10:49:25 am »

I'm playing as part of the Zombie Master Forums Bloodlines game, and we're in like our twelfth year or so.

Migrants stopped coming a few years ago. Fortress population has reached 23 and stopped. It's been three years since the last immigrant. I just get a message "THE FORTRESS ATTRACTED NO MIGRANTS THIS SEASON."

Normally, migration increases with fort value, but our moody dwarves have pushed that up to 603,000 so I should think SOMEONE would want to come visit.

Any ideas as to what is going wrong?

I'm not sure what's wrong but I hope someone posts the answer because I want this to happen in my fort!  Too Many Dwarves!!

I know this isn't very constructive, but the thread title sounds like some sort of euphemism.

THINGS THAT MAY MAKE DIFFERENCE

1. Am using the Relentless Assault mod
2. We've been passing the save file around, so the init should be exactly as it was when the game started unless I somehow changed it magically
3. Someone abandoned and checked legends and whatnot. The civ is totally intact.

Maybe too many deaths are scaring them away - but I think you'd get a message if that's the case.
Does the dwarven caravan come? If not that could be why. Else maybe you're just unlucky :/
It could be something else of course.

Yeah, you get a "nobody even considered a trip to this death trap" message (or something like that) when you get no visitors specifically because of deaths...

I got one of those recently, even though I actually didn't have any dwarves die in the seasons before (although it was in Winter, and I normally get migrants in Spring).  (I think it might be because I killed off my consort the instant he appeared?)

Greed draws Dwarves to your fortress.  Ergo, if you want more migrants, you need to build up your wealth more.  Of course, the odds of a migration are at the whims of the randomizer, so even a fort with 50,000,000 wealth and few deaths can be snubbed a migration wave due to bad luck.  Then too, if you have a population cap and have already reached it, that would contribute to this as well.  Check your config and compare the cap for population to your fort's current population.

I believe that in Nist Akath, the reason there were no migrants was because instead of producing wealth to sell, Captain Mayday just sold traders goblin loot from sieges. So, if you are not producing wealth to export you will get no migrants.

Check the init? Maybe you set the cap to 20 instead of 200 by accident.

600k is not alot.  Find gold, produce goblets, sell to dwarven traders.  Engrave everything then engrave some more.  Mermaid bone bracelets, Dragon roasts, clownite hammers whatever.

Produce a lot of new items, and dig out plenty of new spaces. This will make sure that you keep getting artifacts.

600k should be enough to draw more than 23 dwarves, though.

I had 25 dwarves on my second year, and immigrants pushed that to 52 on my third year, and I probably only had around 600k at the time.

It only took me about 1mil to hit 100 (fifth year).

I think the exported wealth may be a more likely culprit.  Just set up a cook or two to work overtime, and set up a food depot that has no barrels and only accepts prepared food...  my last batch of quarry bush leaf roasts were selling for 20k apiece. I was buying a barrel encrusted with images of my queen's coronation engraved in black diamonds just because it was something to buy for all the crap I was trying to get rid of.  (Reminds me of that Dave Chapelle skit, where he was making fun of rap stars on Cribs, by saying "Some people ask me why I have my food encrusted in diamonds.  One, it's about the most BALLINEST thing you can do.  Two, it makes my dookie twinkle!")

Seriously, check the init just in case you DID change something by accident somehow.

Checked the init. No luck. I'm going to go ahead and designate a "Masterwork finished goods only" stockpile and turn my legendary stoneworker to making mugs.

I wanna make a additional, important note, too.

We haven't been getting Dwarven caravans, either. Gnomish ones, sure. Not Dwarven ones, though...
