Most Dangerous Megabeast You've Ever Found?
« on: February 21, 2010, 06:09:40 am »

Basically, I'm using a modded version of Dig Deeper which gives all my megabeasts [CAN_LEARN], and that slowly makes them more and more dangerous the longer world gen runs on for ( and therefore the longer they survive ).

Well, I found this guy:

His name sounds a bit like an adamantite sex toy, doesn't it? Yeah, then I saw THIS and stopped laughing:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That was 25 years before world gen ended. He probably made his 100th rampage in that time. He had over 100 kills and had been slaughtering kobolds for the past 600 years.

That guy is an utter, utter bad arse. I hope I meet him in Kobold Camp mode, although he seems to have a taste for kobolds. Anyone else got one?

On Legendary Lands, I encountered a Frozen Wind.

I didn't really know of the power of these things at first, but quickly saw what sort of problem I had on my hands: the beasts could fly at will, move at breakneck speed, and dispatched entire caravans and goblin sieges with disconcerting ease.  Worse, they had rapid self-healing.  If you didn't outright kill it on the first go, you'd have to start all over again.

Fortunately, my task force of 20 fully loaded and trained military dwarven champions subdued the creature.

On Legendary Lands, I encountered a Frozen Wind.

This gives me flashbacks to the Plane of Air in NetHack. Friggin' air elementals.

So yeah, this is the kind of thing I've been looking for: megabeasts actually worth their salt. So far I've had a single titan and he's currently stuck in a cage in the bowels of my fort. I don't think any other beasts survived worldgen or they'd surely have shown up by now.

If I gave them all [CAN_LEARN], I'd have to re-gen the world, wouldn't I? :(

Evidently, Dorf Philosopher Uristmedes only figured out the Uristmedes screw. And he ran around naked and covered in water, blood, and vomit all the time, so any discoveries made in his 4/7 bathtub went unnoticed by dorf science.

Nope, but I think you'd have to world regen in order for them to benefit from it.

More impressive than that golem I think is the kobold he was dueling.  A KOBOLD who survives to fight two duels against a towering construct of pure adamantium!?  What mere kobold could survive a single clash with such a beast?  Let alone two!

Only that famous warrior with the muscles thick as an oak, his name?  STRONGUS!!!

I've never found a megabeast.

I've survived countless goblin sieges.
No beast.

A Giant Cave Spider Queen from Dig Deeper. It can spray webs 30 tiles, and shrugged off 15 legendary marksdwarves with quality iron bolts like they were nothing. I finally subdued it with 30 or so hammerdwarves. Lost two in the process, plus a cat who wandered over a web on top of a weapon trap I used for prisoner execution (drop orcs a few z-levels, they're trapimmune but not when they're stunned from the fall, marksdwarves on the battlements finish any lucky enough to survive). They're a pain in the ass to kill, but I wish I had found some way to capture it. Even though it's not tameable, putting it in an arena and using sacrificial goblins/peasants to produce GCSQ web would have been incredibly valuable.

I have encountered 3 megabeasts.  2 of them were in legendary lands, so probly had size 100 or something.  A Hydra took 10 steps toward my fort and died.  A cyclops or something came to my fort and got wrestled to death by one soldier whose spear got stuckin.  Finally a dragon came to my current fort and its now a flamethrower turret guarding my base.  I'm looking for a boy dragon to keep it company and start me a dragon ranch.

Hm ... most dangerous ... well to be honest I've only encountered three.

Least dangerous. A dragon. Shot dead on sight.

Mid dangerous. A skeletal dragon. Killed one dwarf, wrecked a wall grate and burninated a carpenter's shop and a large number of masterwork bins.

Most dangerous. A titan. Killed two dwarves and a dog. Crippled one dwarf and a dog.

Most dangerous non-megabeast: "Rakel Hatchetnotched" human elite bowman/local leader of goblins shot 4 dwarves dead. One civilian, three military.

A hydra that wondered straight into a cage trap without even seeing one of my dwarves.

I had only one cage trap on the WHOLE map.

I need to find tougher mega-beasts.

it only half counts because this was in adventure mode, but:

I entered a cave to kill a titan for osme random village, found the titan, stabbed him once with my sword in the foot, where it got stuck. I then got wrestled for a while and also lost my shield. the titan then beat me to near-death with the shield, at wich point I managed to dislodge the sword, only to have it wrestled from my hand. I was then run thru with it.

I made 2 more adventurers to try and kill that titan, but with sword and shield it had become unstoppable. I wish I still had the save of that to start a fort near his cave...

I wonder if their weapons carry on to Fortress mode.

So this kobold went toe-to-toe with an adamantium golem FOUR times?  Strongus, indeed.

The very idea of a Titan Swordmaster would be enough to re-evaluate how dangerous titans are.
