Oregon trail 2 was probably the best in my opinion, having played up till Oregon 4 or 5 (can't remember). The downside of all Oregon Trails: I wanted to shoot me some Indians, dammit. I don't care how unhistoric it is since most indians were relatively peaceful until they were interfered with. I also wanted to scalp people. And that guy with the butcher knife who is a dickhead should have been shootable in Oregon 2, like in the hunting screen.

I did devote a good amount of hours of my childhood playing Oregon Trail 2 though, despite it's total lack of satisfying violence. Also, shotguns are unbelievably useless.

Now, if you want a good trail game go for Africa Trail, or even Amazon Trail in my opinion.

Hey, so I just downloaded Oregon Trail and I'm playing it on DOSBox. Any tips? Strategies?

Ensure you bring at least one carpenter, one mason, and probably a trader. You'll want 100-150 turtles, about 100 barrels of booze, maybe some bauxite and copper ore, an anvil, and a pick of any type.

When you get to the first river, make your mason a miner temporarily and dig out some stone to build a wood furnace. Break down the wagon and burn some of the wood to 2xcharcoal and some more to ash. Use ash+anvil to make a forge and break down wood furnace to make smelter. Smelt copper ore to bar, make bar into axe.

Now, you are all set to play OREGON FORTRESS!

The scary part about it, is that DF 1.0 will probably be a far better sim of caravan's then Oregon trail.
