« on: February 21, 2010, 01:29:40 am »

Hey, so I just downloaded Oregon Trail and I'm playing it on DOSBox. Any tips? Strategies?

Never ford.  Ever.  Just don't.

Other than that, it's a really easy game.  You can win in a few minutes by setting the pace to grueling and the food to meager.  You probably won't lose your whole team.

Before doing anything regarding rivers, you want to make sure you have several thousand pounds of meat from hunting. 10000 should be sufficient.

Ustxu Iceraped the Frigid Crystal of Slaughter was a glacier titan. It was the only one of its kind. A gigantic feathered carp composed of crystal glass. It has five mouths full of treacherous teeth, enormous clear wings, and ferocious blue eyes. Beware its icy breath! Ustxu was associated with oceans, glaciers, boats, and murder.

Bring as many people as possible.  That way the others can eat them when they starve to death.

Don't listen to him, he's trying to kill you.

25000 pounds is the bare minimum if you have a full party and want to survive.

I assume that having lots of weight makes it impossible to ford the river or something?

Consider how tall your oxen are likely to be.  Then, compare that to the depth of the river.  That's the most important factor, really.  To be specific, I think that 3 feet is the cutoff.  When you can take a raft, do so in preference to caulking and floating--it's worth it, versus the risks.

I've never seen a river low enough to ford.

You're just not doing it right, see. You can buy oxen stilts at the starting town if you know where to go, then ford every river easily.

Name that Oregon Trail: I played a later version of Orgeon Trail that had a lot more stuff you could buy and was a little bit more graphical. The most interesting part was that you could make obviously bad decisions when problems came up and see how far you could go. I survived all the way while rubbing salt into my peoples wounds and running my oxen down mountains really fast. Unfortunately my best friend died of dysentery... blood lettings (or w/e I did) couldn't cure it.

Anyone know which one this was?

Start in Ohio and end in Salt Lake City.  Shortest trip possible = Easiest win.
