C&C 4 Open Beta
« on: February 20, 2010, 10:43:16 pm »

Quote
in the year 2062, humanity found itself on the brink of extinction. Tiberium, the mysterious, alien crystalline structure that infested Earth for decades and caused years of relentless conflict between the Global Defense Initiative (GDI) and the Brotherhood of Nod, was close to rendering the planet uninhabitable. In the midst of this crisis, Kane, Nod's prophetic leader, emerged from seclusion to deliver GDI the message that he had developed a system that could control Tiberium and harness its power. But he could not build this "Tiberium Control Network" without GDI's cooperation. Thus, the two opposing factions—GDI and Nod—found themselves in a desperate and unlikely alliance to stop Tiberium from extinguishing mankind.

I may not play CnC 4. I think EA just messed up the game, I also hated how they did RA3.

One of the things I hate about the EA CnCs are the bad storyline. (Well in my mind it's bad)
I also wished they didn't get rid of the disruptors, hover MLRS, and the old walker types.

Oh here is something I heard about CnC 4, they got rid of base building. You don't have a permanent base any more. Dammit.

And I thought they were off their rocker when they made 'ore mines' in RA3.

You basically have a Tiberian Sun style mobile War Factory except it can build any unit and it has lasers.

Erm. Those are fairly bad reasons for disliking the series. The story is one of the best parts, those cutscenes are just epic with a fairly good story behind them. Its got Kane, biggest badass of all games evar. They also brought back the MRLS. And hte disrupters were fun, but they killed your own units for christ sakes!

And as for RA3, the Ore mine thing doesn't really effect gameplay at all. If anything it adds to it, you no longer have to consistantly micromanage where your harvesters have to go, allowing you to focus more on killing the enemies.

If I wanted that, I'd play warcraft. Tiberium/Ore fields were part of CnC heritage, it was part of what separated it from other RTS games.

Now they are taking away base building.

Here is something I don't miss about old CnCs.

Units are damn slow at all game speeds unless you put it on "Fastest."

Although I agree that Kane is a badass. (A TIME TRAVELING BADASS) I still don't like part of some of the CnC story.

Quote
Units can become veterans by killing enemy units or structures, or picking up green tiberium cores dropped by dead or dismantled units. Veteran units gain damage reduction (and self-healing at elite status) but not damage bonuses.
What. One of the best thing that came from veterancy was increased power. I liked it when a light infantry shot something similar to a Cyborg gun. No. Just no.

At least they brought the mutants back.

Well, they got rid of collecting Tiberium, having power, or even just having money.
Now they also have a unit limit like other games, and they made build time longer.
Apparently power is involved with something called the defense class. Tiberium collecting is for researching only. So they technically didn't get rid of it but they made it different.

I'll stop my rambling for now.

I guess they decided that C&C succeeds based solely on the fact that it has Kane in it and that gameplay is irrelevant.

I will not play C&C 4 simply because there will not be support for the game post-launch. I read an article at Rock Paper Shotgun that said EA laid off quite a few people and that the developpers of C&C 4 were also fired. At least, they will be fired after C&C 4 hits the market.

So, no, I'm not touching C&C 4, even if they give it to me for free. There are limits to understanding and EA sure as hell crossed a line.

I quiet enjoyed RA 3, Its a different type of game play, but it makes for fun quick competitive matches with a variety of tactics.

That being said there was still base building, base building is important in a RTS because it makes the opponent "squishy"
Even  if I am down and nearly out the last quarter of the game I can still get a spy in the opponents PowerPoint and then chronoswap him out for a transport full of engies and a commando.

From what I see C&C 4 doesn't give me the chance to strike at the opponent like that. The units are all way to strait forward its just a mechanized gumbo soup, no tactics no love.

Its the classic fanboi arguments here. If they had made another Tiberian Sun clone in the generals engine people would have complained that it was too much like the original and theres nothing new in it. For one I like a developer that tries to mix things up a bit.

As for the C&C4 gameplay, it works extremely well. But I seriously just wished EA didn't fire the entire dev team before the game had finished. No motivation anyone?

And Shadow, have you even played RA3?

No lan support, No dedicated servers. Some sort of online progression system. Laaame.

What are you going to unlock in the progression system. Is a level 20 person going to be able to use different units than a lvl 1? I can't imagine that working very well at all.

Yes more units and turrets and shit get unlocked at higher level.

It sucks bad.

Mobile Con yard is kinda boring you just steamroll to nearest "capture" point and start pumping out whatever you got.

and the entire game is rock-paper-scissors.

so yeah its pretty lame.

Yeah, Slaves to Armok 3 should be an FPS that's just like another FPS but crappier.  And it should be developed by EA.

Hm, the way they keep the series "fresh" apparently is by using a totally new dev team every time to create a totally different game...  There's a reason there're such things as sequels.  It's because sometimes a game is so good the first time you want another game that's similar but improves things.  Taking away things that have been a staple of a series and made it unique for over a decade and replacing them with whatever happens to be popular at the time is not creativity.  It's generic.  Admittedly, the mobile base isn't really popular, it's only been done before a few times, but they're just destroying something that  make the series individualized and replacing it with a derivative of something else.  Which in itself was created to individualize those games from C&C.  Go figure.

Oh yeah, and firing the dev team before the game is finished seems like it's becoming a common tactic.  They have to give them a certain amount of heads up time before they lose their job or else they need to pay them severance.  Doing it this way they can stop paying them the moment the game is "done" and save that much more money.

If they can keep people from ever seeing games as art then they they win.  Because it'll be just a manufacturing industry.  You're manufacturing the next money sink for the next consumer with money to burn and no time to think for himself.  You want him to play the game, love it, and stop playing.  Then buy another one.
