Who then send their computers on to middle schools, and down on to elementary schools.  Which was why my elementary school was still using Apple IIe's as they entered The Year Two Thousand.

Heh. Because of this I am 16 and have fond memories of Oregon Trail.

The invasion of privacy  of a private home is horrible, though the user of the laptop could have their privacy right waived if it was apart of the agreement of the laptop  for anything done on the laptop.

I seriously doubt any judge would let that slip. There are some things you just can't put into such an agreement, especialy if the one singing for it can be expected not to forsee the consequences of it (We're still talking kids here)

I think I didn't make myself as clear as I should, the web cam, is a gross violation, though knowing whats been done on the laptop is not privacy concern.

Yeah... having the usage of the laptop monitored wouldn't be entirely unreasonable.

Apologies if this has been mentioned before, but you may have heard about Kevin Rudd (Australia's PM) giving out notebooks to schools across Australia.

I'm on one right now. I think I'm going to tell my webcam off now, just in case.

While monitering what the students are visiting on the computers isn't that big a deal (at my middle/highschool when using the computers their monitering anyway) the webcam bits pure bullshit. Granted the whole remote view in case of theft has helped before but unless it was called in stolen theres no reason to turn it on. Also easy way to beat the webcam, put a piece of paper or something on it.

I wouldn't worry. Its probably an isolated incident, like razor blades in halloween candy here in the states.

What the Aussie colloquiums for Americans?

Man, they were SO on the verge of a crossing the boundary from ordinary criminals into full-on supervillainy.

But nope, they had to ruin it by being stupid.

B12 used to be unblocked on mine, but now I have to go to the trouble of googling for a proxy site.

This may sound silly, but even though both my computer and my webcam are my own, I always turn my webcam away from me when I'm not using it.

I unplug things when I'm not using them; the ultimate firewall.

Imagine a cool peice of sky-blue and milk-white marble about 3cm by 2cm and by 0.5cm, containing a tiny 2mm malacolite crystal. Now imagine the miles of metamorphic rock it's embedded in that no pick or chisel will ever touch. Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.
