Gonna have to go with 7. Optimal drowning number, max magma number, seven settlers, etc.

As for fake numbers...planepacked. We can define planepacked as a googolplex raised by Graham's number.

"Man, did you see how many times he hit that elephant with a hammer?"
"Yeah man, came close to a planepacked!"
"Oh...so the elephant is dead, then?"
"Oh yeah. Very dead. He's been swinging at air for probably the last 2 hours or so."

Don't forget, in Lord of the Rings, the 7 dwarf clans who receive the 7 rings.
Magma is still the best reason.

7... The number of elven kingdoms a reasonable dwarf should be able to take down, after piercing damage gets adjusted to AFK plausability and reasonability.

7 is the most likely candidate. But who could forget of the little red 2's?

Honorable mention. Not enough going for it IMO.

7 definitely wins, but 25000 receives an honorable mention.

In the sake of spoilers, you either know this one or you don't.

I agree about 7 being most dwarvenly.

I vote -1.

Since with dwarves helping, you're likely to end up with less than nothing. ;D

Come to think of it, 7 looks kinda like a pick... a one-sided pick, but still...

On the other hand, it may very slightly resemble a POINTY EAR!!!!

You heretics. It's gotta be 6. 6 is the number of sides of the shape that composes the dwarf fortress universe, and everything within it. The cube and the cuboid are the indivisible atoms that were there at the dawn of creation. You talk of "7 depths of magma", but what you don't appreciate is that you are referring to 7 cuboid, stacked upon each other, to form a cube of magma.

As you add more magma to a tile, it tends towards a cube. Cubes have 6 sides. Magma is the most awesome thing ever. Hence, cubes are the most awesome number.

I thought dwarves took the same amount of time to move in any of the eight horizontal directions? Or are those just the sweet, sweet, lies of an un-updated wiki based fairly often upon supposition?

AFAIK, yes. Diagonal movement cost is multiplied by 1.4(14?)

Isn't this value supposed to be the square root of 2 or something? I think I remember that from my geometry classes.

Yeah, and 1.41 is a pretty decent approximation of it.

In a 45-45-90 triangle (i.e. that formed by two adjacent sides of a square and the diagonal), the hypotenuse is sqrt(2) times the length of one of the sides.
