Some nobles are bad, some nobles are good.  I once had a tax collector that liked adamantium - I named him Goblin Bait, and he became my first line of defense against the green menace.  That or I stuck him pulling an utterly pointless lever in front of the fortress and then built fortifications around him.  It's still debated as to exactly what role he played.

On the other hand, my Baron (now duke) really loved brass.  His tomb holds a brass sarcophagus in a chamber that has been platedd, wall and floor, by brass.  A few times every year he will mandate some more brass bars (or blocks, or statues, et cetera) be made.  He has a nice garden filled with brass statues.

His wife loves spears.  However, most of these spears are currently upright and attached to gears, as she also likes blue diamonds.  Just in case.  She hasn't said anything yet, but I'd like to think that if she does ever ask for a blue diamond something, she will at least die happy.

My tax collector likes silver and goblets.  Naturally, his room now holds several chests filled with silver goblets.

It can be fun to spoil your nobles just to add flavor to your fortress.  Imagining future adventurers cracking open a door and stepping into an ancient tomb covered top to bottom in brass, or finding the remains of a dwarf sealed within an improvised gibbet at the front of the fortress.

Q: What do you get when you take 100 clear glass windows, 1000 silver bars, 6700 gold bars, and 18,000 marble blocks?

A: A very large wall.

Y'know, I have never had my hammerer cripple a dwarf before, and I never use a captain of the guard. . . Does this really happen so often as to be a major problem? (i.e. Am I just that lucky so far)

(There is a story behind this. . .)

This is an Alder Omelette. All craftsdwarfship is of highest quality. It is encircled with bands of cheese. It menaces with spikes of bacon, ham, and peppers. On the object is an image of dwarves in egg white. The dwarves are eating.

Because it's so amusing to hear stories of the last recruit, pressganged into defending the fortress, making the critical shot that saves all the battle-hardened veterans... then going crazy because the cats have filled the dining room with miasma.

That depends on what you think a major problem is.

If you lose one dwarf each year to this. Is that really such a huge problem? How many will you be able to take care of? I personally don't mind large groups of cripples. They add fun to the fortress.

Unless I have a megaconstruction going I have so many idlers at any given time anyway. I have nothing against putting 5 dwarves to bed permanently and having specially designated nurses to care for them as their only choir.

Hell. Once the economy kicks in, I notice the nurses can afford a decent room and everything. The cripples serve a purpose damnit! all hail the hammerer! there's a reason he arrived with the tax collector!

I have enough useless freeloaders in my Fort already, I don't need the nobles enforcing a goddamn quota.

I don't really have a problem with the hammerer going after some random peon. The thing is, half the time he goes after a dwarf who has an absolutely pivotal role in the fort (like a Legendary brewer, for instance.)

Even if he/she hammers some random dwarf, the results can be almost as disastrous, depending on how many friends the victim had. It's not unheard of for dwarves to have as many as 30 friends, plus family members. If the hammerer hammers someone who has 30+ friends, chances are that someone's going to be pushed over the edge and possibly set off a tantrum-hammering spiral.

In DF it's true, though next version will change that. Next version, if a dwarf loses his leg and he has a crutch, he'll get up after it scars and work one handed the rest of his life. Toady mentioned in the dev log that a miner with a compound fracture to his hand got up and mined with his other hand once the pain died down. Should be interesting.

Personally, I hate nobles who bar the trade of major exports. A noble who bans the export of goblets, cloth, or totems is on the short list of sacrifices to the fire imps. A noble who demands something limited and valuable (dragon scale, addy, etc) or nonexistant (glass namely) is right there with him. Nobles who have a nasty habit of "buying" valuable goods (had a noble with a giant cave swallow leather fetish take a 20k decorated glove) may or may not survive, if they wander out during a siege I won't stop them. Ultimately, I think players would be a bit more tolerant of the nobles if they produced something useful.

Hell, what if they just generated a general positive thought for dwarves that lived in their fort.. like "proud to serve the nobility" or something less stupid, but basically the idea that the nobility are a source of pride and happy thoughts for the worker bee dwarfs..

I kill off the Nobles that mandate anything a bit outrageous.

I keep the Hammerer for things like berserk dwarves. They're going to end up dead anyway, so he beats them to a pulp before they kill anyone. Usually stops tantrum spirals, actually

Cripples make a good bait distraction for a siege, lay a bed out in the middle of nowhere and let wait for the gabbo's to try to kill the cripple in it while all your healthy dwarfs run for cover! It makes them useful!

Sigged.

I love how Dwarf Fortress seems to force its players to become one of two things:  Either you manage to become a maniacly cackling Mad Scientist, or you just become a plain old genocidal sociopath.

No need to ask, good sir! I appreciate the civility though.  ;D

You may sig it, print it, sell it on coffee cups or make a movie surrounding it if you're so inclined.
