In this case, either people prone to paranoid schizophrenia tend toward marijuana use or marijuana use aggravates existing tendencies toward paranoid schizophrenia.

Or there is some third factor influencing both

the reason I keep repeating correlation =/= causation is because people don't get it. One is not necessarily even causing the other.

Huh?

You might sit in a corner thinking everyone's thinking about you, or you might laugh with everyone else. Having schizophrenia is not being able to shake the former feeling, and marijuana intensifies the psyche and the senses. If the former feeling is intensified by smoking weed, it's not nessesarily any worse than when sober, because although the reality of the situation is more pugnant (?), the observer still merely observes it. After all, why would a person identify with being psychotic if he believed the phantoms floating through his mind were true?  There are just more phantoms when high, but with a spacey, more inward perspective, the aggressive phantoms may seem trivialities.

In my mind there's a definate link between weed and psychosis (having a bad trip is psychosis) but the benefits (a passive attitude) outweigh the cons for most people with psychosis. In fact it should probably be the first drug of choice for psychiatrists.

I don't think weed is ever prescribed by mainstream doctors for mental problems...it's used as a painkiller.

Of course, this means that it can't be said to certainly not aggravate mental illnesses.  There has been correlation with schizophrenia with cannabis, with heavy users having a generally higher occurance of it.  Certainly, it seems as if cannabis can give a higher chance of developing a mental illness, or make a condition worse.

OH MY GOD CORRELATION IS NOT CAUSATION

You don't understand... I agree with you completely, you haven't read my post correctly.  I said the word "seems" as that is how it appears on first impression, at face value.  I do realise that your mantra is true and so do most people... I don't think people are laying down facts here, but more like opinions on the matter.

Also, don't swear  ;)

I just heard on NPR how there's some synthetic compound that gives the same effects as THC. Kansas is trying to ban it, the logic being "Well, it's like marijuana, and marijuana's illegal so it must be bad, therefore we have to ban this drug as well."

Man, it's like people seriously don't have the capacity for elementary logic.

Its not incapability, its undereducation.

Logic courses for most degree programs are not required. I personally think Crit. thinking skills & logic need to be taught from elementary school

Well, we're talking about law enforcement agents and legislators here, not Joe Redneck.

Actually, I take  that back, as the two may be one and the same.

In any case, the reasoning is so obviously flawed that only a moral crusade could hope to cover up the holes in it.

That line of thought is abhorrent to me.  Equating morality and legality, I mean.

There few profession that require logic to function, there many more that can benefit from it. Law Enforcement officials, the 'head wigs' may very well be voted in. I know they are for various counties in California, and numerous other states, and most legislators are mostly politicians, again not requiring a good basis in crit. thinking or formal logic.

Lawyering is the only profession that I can think of where formal logic is needed to function and to study. I am probably wrong on that. The state legistotates probably do have lawyer under them, but they are not their to particularly critique but probably there to place the sentiments of the headwigs into legal language.

@Wiggles: I'm not talking about application of formal logical theorems here. I'm talking about, being completely retarded, versus, not.
