I expect you could. I've been able to attempt to outrun them with normal speed.

Excuse me, but what's so awesome about katana.
Its a two-handed meat slicer that cuts through flesh and bone rather well due to its weight and draw angle.  However its quite useless against an armored foe, and exposes the wielder because the weapon is too heavy to use with a shield.

Good for killing peasants, worthless in battle.  Against an armored foe you'd do better with a claymore which cleaves instead of cuts (better yet take a spear and shield).

Samuri didn't carry a Yari with them because they wanted a walking stick.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Katanas were used because plate armor was virtually nonexistent in feudal Japan, with most soldiers armored in lamellar or leather. They were a personal weapon meant to be carried by samurai both on and off the battlefield. Comparing a yari to a katana, which one is better depends entirely on the situation. Its like saying that a spear is better than a sword.

Someone should mod in Uzis and Berettas, so Urist McNeo can dual-wield them.

Just make one-handed crossbows and use the arrow-stack glich/bug. The crossbows will fire so fast that "Bullet Hell" wouldn't even begin to describe it.

It's a glitch which allows a dwarf to carry as much bolts as you want, given enough micro and patience.

Oh god. I can see the cast of Touhou characters all going WTF at a very buff dwarf wearing one of their outfits.

If I could draw i would draw this.

I'm gonna pretend I never read that post... :-X

What else can you mess up with super-speed? If you throw something and stay in place, does it move? Can you out-run something you threw? Crossbow bolts?

Have you noticed that, in fiction, characters with katanas (swords in general, actually) tend to have super-speed/strength/both in a level well above the enemy, enough to render the possible disadvantages moot? But still, why mod in a katana with swords a-plenty in the game?

So, basically, it is just a matter of luck whether you live or suffer horrible death... sounds like dwarf fortress.

well, people like variety. I modded in side-swords, arbalests, khopeshes and all sorts of weapons. most of them are simply renamed swords/crossbows/etc. but I like being a little more... complex.

Note that it is physically impossible for anything in the DF universe to travel faster than a flying crossbow bolt (1 tile per frame). A [SPEED: 0] creature moves 1 tile per frame, and is thus travelling at DF's equivalent of the speed of light.

Yes; anything moving two tiles (or more) per frame would be warping, and could potentially travel through walls.

New version needs warp magic. And yes, terrible, terrible things should happen if you get melded with walls.

Making double walls viable and interesting.
Hmm...
