If you must use a sword to fight in real life use a side-sword with a shield. Its a fast, light and durable longsword.

Of course I'm a coward who doesn't want to die and would rather avoid such situations altogether.

Also, speaking in DF terms, a side-sword is not the era we're in.
I'd much rather take a spear, which is very useful even when untrained.

1. Really depends. 1 on one without a shield Spear >> sword.

However even a mediocre shield + short sword will give you a greater advantage vs. a spearman if you're quick.

Too many factors to easily say "this is better than this" :P.

Spears aren't really designed to be used by individuals, they're group weapons. Still, a spearman would probably wield a shield too.

Nope, projectiles appear to behave as usual. Hmmm, I wonder about fireballs/dragon fire?
