Crusader Kings

Quote from: Wikipedia
Crusader Kings is a grand strategy game made by Paradox Interactive about the period from December 26 1066 until December 30 1452. It was released in 2004. Unlike other past Paradox titles (Hearts of Iron, Victoria and the Europa Universalis series), Crusader Kings focuses on building a dynasty instead of a country, having similarities to role-playing games and even The Sims. The lead game programmer was Johan Andersson. As with the other Paradox Interactive history games, Crusader Kings must be considered a macro-management real-time strategy game (as moves are played out simultaneously and continuously) but typically involves far more planning than the fast-paced action that is usually associated with real-time strategy.

Deus Vult
Quote from: Wikipedia
The expansion pack redesigns some of the basic features of the game, such as DNA inheritance, religious warfare, use of friends and rivals, etc. In addition, new scripting commands were added as well as new character traits.

Deus Vult Improvement Pack (DVIP)
Quote from: Wikipedia
A few years ago fans came up with a mod that substantially improved gameplay and historical verisimilitude called DVIP. It added several new cultures and titles, as well as allowing female rulership.

Let's start with the situation in the realms for some background, at 1066 in Northern Germany.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Duke Lothar Udo-Staden. Starts off fairly old, but at least he already has a son.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Duchy of Brandenburg -- including initial cabinet members added after turn of the first year (started with none but his wife. Yeesh.) Not the most capable cabinet in Europe, but they're more than efficient. The Olive-Brown on the map is the current expanse of the Kingdom of Germany (which should really be referred to as the Holy Roman Empire, but I digress. . .)

Next post will begin the actual game.

It has been many years since my wife disobeyed me, I have sat in a lonely throne room listening to the Court drone on and on about the state of affairs of the Duchy. Finally, I decided it was time for her to return, and thus I sent the knights to go retrieve her.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

1067 has been a long year already, with the German King trying desperately to get us all to fight his many frivilous wars on our ducat. I regularly dismissed his messengers, informing them that Brandenburg is not the pawn of some fool that simply wants to call themselves "Great". My wife's return is a blessing.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

With the coming of Spring so, too, comes a letter from the Pope, he has a Bishop that he needs to find a home for, a lost sheep that he feels I have a need for. That the appointment will be mutually beneficial for a pious man such as myself. Pious. Hah. We shall see, I approve the appointment, but regret it almost immediately upon the Bishop's arrival.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

They call this man a priest?! He is a skeptic! He barely deserves the title! . . . also, I do not like the way he looks at my son. I will need to keep an eye on this one.

With the summer comes good news, Oda is with child. It is a blessing! Apparently tending for the lost sheep has brought God's favor.

Adelheid is turning into a fine young woman. The nannies will take after her, and I am certain that she will fetch a fine husband. Already she is cunning and bright. A fine young woman indeed!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Our lands prosper, though I am rapidly losing patience with my Liege. Already it is seen in other Courts. Many lands, all rejected, have requested alliances. It almost seems as though a conspiracy is being wrought against King Heinrich. I fear that Civil War is inevitable, and already the Empire is falling apart.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Bishop von Wetterau has been spreading the Holy Word. Much to his dismay, I am certain, I will use this to my advantage. He lectured me on Pride, and what it "goeth before," but with such a captive audience I simply can not sit back and allow the Pope all of the focus. Obviously we Udo-Staden are a family chosen by God to rule this fine fiefdom. It is necessary the people be made to know.

With a great deal of deliberation, much funds were set aside for infrastructural improvements within Brandenburg itself. A forestry is necessary. It is time that all this woodland be cleared to allow for our people to live safely behind walls, with warm homes. We have many crafters, so the logging efforts will also be turned into exports. Construction begins in October.

It becomes evident. I was right:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A conspiracy is afoot! I commit myself to the treachery, if for no reason other than to attempt to halt an impending Civil War. We need not see the Empire fall to fighting. Barely a month passes and the Count of Meissen comes to me demanding I join them in the Civil War. I failed to stop it, and I declined. There must be a peaceful way. I will not shed the blood of Saxons imply because the King is a fool.

I have taken to raising my son myself. He is a brilliant young boy. He will make an excellent Duke. Already he walks in my footsteps. Proud, trusting, honest. A truly honorable man. I am so proud to call him my son.

We end the decade with a quiet year. No longer under the weighted hand of the Empire. Free men, to govern as we see fit. We are surrounded by enemies. Pagans to the north, the Poles to the East -- though they seem fine enough. To the South is the Empire, and the Emperor-King is most displeased with me. Hopefully he will remain embroiled in his own wars long enough that his power will not be a concern.

We need friends, and amazingly enough -- one came to me.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A young Duke by the name of Beringer has contacted us. He is youthful, but he controls a great deal of land. He will be an excellent friend for young Heinrich. I do hope that they correspond, they are not that different, honestly. May this alliance last. . .

January, 1070 -

Would you believe it! Five years old, already! And such a bright child! Today he asked me where babes come from. Five! I could not help but chuckle to myself, knowing now how mine own father must have felt. Like my father before me, I knelt beside the boy and told the same story my father once told me. . about birds and bees. . . ahh, the analogy. . .

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As I rose to my feet again, my bones let out a creaking that would wake the dead. My age is starting to catch up to me. I begin to fear that I will not see Heinrich's tenth birthday at this rate. I spend as much of my time with him as I am able.

April, 1070 -

I received a letter today from the Bishop of Altmark, ever the loyal vassal. Frederick has waged war on the tribes of Mecklenberg to the north. My eyes have long been on the fertile lands they control, and access to the sea for trade with the Danes. It would be a most daring gambit to attempt to use the Emperor's wars to grab land from them. The Chief of Wolgast is vulnerable, however the tribes are many and have vast amounts of soldiers. . . After much debate, my Marshall sways me, the die is cast!

To war!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I received a letter in May whilest leading the assault on Wolgast -- Bishop van Wetterau has done wonders spreading the word as directed. The people love me all the more and are speaking of my "pious" ways throughout the Duchy!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Heralds prepare to return to Brandenburg to share of the tales of our impending victory as we continue to siege Wolgast. They ask of my ancestry and my actions. I can see no other way to answer save for honesty. I was raised an honest man, as my son is being raised. It is the only way.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

September, 1070 -

Horrible news from the homeland.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We are being sieged. This Gambit may have been a terrible mistake. The Emperor caught news of my troops marching across the border into Wolgast and must have made peace with the tribes, and they have marched upon the capital in my absence. Such a fool I am! The siege continues, and I have been drafting plans for counter-attack to rescue my people with my Marshall. May God offer me some solution.

October, 1070 -

Less than a week later and God answers my prayers! Things had been looking grim. Fifteen hundred men, as I am told, have been sieging Brandenburg for a week, and there was no way our troops would return in time, much less would have a chance to succeed. I had been praying for a miracle! My son is in that castle, and I worried for his safety.

My evening's prayers had just finished when a scruffy, unkempt messenger arrived from the tribes. He seemed nervous, and that put me on edge as I suspected some form of ultimatum from him, that I would be forced to concede to. He then dropped to one knee and spoke.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A smile spread across my face. We are going home. We are going home the victors.

January, 1071 -

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Brandeburg is gaining status throughout Europe. My wife has given me two more daughters, and the coffers continue to grow. I am feeling my age, however. It became apparent in the last battle that I am not the young man that I used to be, and whereas I used to fight in the lines with my men, I now must stand back and watch from afar. My Marshall claims it is better that way, that it is best that the Duke be safe and not risk his own life in combat. Pah, I say. A leader should be willing to do anything he orders upon his men.

I have grown to be great friends with Count Fredrich of Anhalt. We spend our afternoons Falconing in the hills at the foot of the Harz Mountains, reminiscing over that which brought us to where we are. Ahh, memories. I wish I could have you back at times, but no. We must move forward. . .

May, 1071 -

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I know I was questioning this... Bishop before, however I have grown to like him -- though I still do not like how he looks at my son. I am concerned, however, he is showing some great signs of stress. He has spent a great deal of time in Wolgast, apparently attempting to convert the Pagan animals. I begin to worry for his mental state. Despite my urgings that he rest, he continues taking daily trips north. God protect him.

September, 1071 -

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Those silly pagan fools, druids they call themselves, they have come to me decrying some... nonsensical sign. My death foretold, they say. I sent them away to the Bishop. He cares more about that nonsense than I. A year to live. Pah! I have more life left in me.

November, 1071 -

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The captain of the guard has come to me with a grievance. Apparently this winter has been harsh, and the men are freezing. Some have been sent to the Chiurgeon with severe pain in their limbs. They requested warmer clothes.

Without question, I call over the steward and make the arrangements. Weakened soldiers are a weakened country. We can not allow ourselves to be so. ((By the way, random OOC - this event was awesome. 100 ducats to gain some prestige AND I got an immediate upgrade from Chain and Leather to Light Chain Mail in Brandenburg))

The year drew to a close with a second son granted me by my wife. We are truly blessed.

May, 1072 -

The war in Germany is raging on. The Count of Lausitz, to my immediate south, is far off in German lands with no one to defend his home. With two sons I need more lands to give unto them, and long have I looked to the lands nestled on the banks of the river. My Spymistress comes to me with papers -- presumably forgeries, but she knows my distaste for her. . . work. . . so she leaves their source out -- that show I have a legitimate, ancestral claim to his lands.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

...the Marshall will ready the men...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

....we march.

As we leave, I get news that van Wetterau has lapsed into depression, and he pleaded with me to heed the words of those druids. Apparently they have been getting to him, but it is no matter, as I have greater things to worry about.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Victory is swift. The Count is wise enough to know that he had none that could intervene with my march upon Lausitz. The war ends in under a month.

June, 1072 -

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Were I a younger man, temptation would have overwhelmed me. She reminds me of Oda, when we were young. Ahh, so many years ago. No matter, this woman is of no consequence. Simply flights of fancy of an old man.

Yes, I'm using DVIP with the DVIP Addon and BOPACK graphics pack. :)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following information is taken from the notes of the Regency Council for Heinrich Staden

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Nearly a year to the day since those druids warned Lothar-Udo of his impending demise, Heinrich is too young to lead at this point in his life, barely seven years old, we -- the capable members of his court that continue his learnings in his father's absence, will lead in his place.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The poor boy is already showing signs of stress, as his father was raising him at his side in the court. Though a sad day throughout all of Brandenburg, it is most sad for a single young boy who sits alone in the throne room.

December 1072 -

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

What a laugh. The Mecklenbergian tribes came forth to request an alliance with us. Alliance. There was no deliberation necessary. The messenger will have hell to pay when he returns home with our chortled response.

September, 1073 -

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The pagans of Wolgast apparently did not appreciate how we responded to their original homelands. They started marching with pitchforks and looting. We will set some men aside to police the area, though we are mostly unconcerned.

Furthermore, the Burghers take our focus on the revolt to their advantage, and leverage some weight into the table of focus of law, demanding more rights:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Honestly, there was no need for them to partake in such obvious political wrangling. We agree that City Law should overshadow Canonical Law. We are, after all, not priests.

October, 1073 -

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A powerful alliance with a powerful man. We can see no reason to decline. Many frivilous wars across the world from us have been engaged in, and with most we declined to ability to project force over such great distance. We are certain the Austrians will understand.

February, 1074 -

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Poles have seen the strength to their west in our great Duchy and sent one of their sons to learn in our court. We accepted and begin teaching him the ways of our great people. It will do much to improve relations with our neighbors across the river.

July, 1074 -

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Excellent work by the Stewards. Brandenburg is in a state of extreme prosperity. We may soon continue improvements of infrastructure, our new territories are in desperate need of getting brought to modern times.

August, 1074 -

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A very brilliant Knight arrived today. A man named Folkan. He offered to teach the young Duke in the ways of war for a. . . sizeable fee. After much deliberation, we agreed to pay him his outrageous price, on the condition that he also remain as Marshal of Brandenburg.

He accepted.

Shortly thereafter, we hear news from the Bishop of Altmark. He has declared independence. A bishop. This is a man of God?! The Church wonders why Brandenburg moves further away from them as time passes when they allow such insults to be thrown upon the crown! Worse yet, he makes this decision when the coffers are emptied from assisting our great Duke's son, with whom he was days ago fiercly loyal to the name, and we are unable to respond.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It will not happen today. It will not happen tomorrow, likely not for many years, but he will pay.

He will pay dearly.

September, 1075 -

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ah, problems from the Clergy never stop, however this time they bring the Law of the Land to us to make claims on lands within the Duchy that they say is theirs by matter of tradition.

The laws do not lie, and we are bound by them, that is Lothar-Udo's way, and therefore it is the way of Brandenburg. Begrudgingly, we grant them this land.

Historian's Notes: Interestingly, there is a gap of information in the council's records from the previous notations in 1075 and the following notations which resume in 1078 for a very, very brief period, then again in 1079. We continue to attempt to cross-reference with lands outside of Brandenburg for the historical record, but little information has been found. It seems that Brandenburg remained upon a quiet, internal moment of peace building infrastructure and remaining out of foreign affairs.  (( i.e. Absolutely nothing of interest happened for four freakin' years besides me building a couple sawmills. :D ))

April, 1078 -

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It seems the Steward has been using a few more... forceful methods of obtaining greater taxes. Worse yet, after some careful checking of the books, that money is nowhere to be seen. Hundreds of ducats worth of gold are simply.... missing. Yet strangely our "fine" Steward has many new dresses and clothes.

She has been fired, and replaced with a more capable Steward that will serve the Duchy, not their own pocket.

December, 1078 -

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Pope has called for a Crusade against the muslims in Jeruselam. We wish the Knights throughout the world well. God be with you.

January, 1079 -

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Our men our prepared, the plans are drafted, the coffers are full. When we stated that fool Bishop would pay, we meant with Blood. We march to reclaim Altmark for the Duchy.

April, 1079 -

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The siege begins.

May, 1079 -

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Amusingly, the fool Bishop gave up in less time than it took our men to march to Altmark. Our reclaimation has completed.

September, 1079 -

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Upon hearing that the lands of Altmark were returned, Bishop von Wetterau recovered from his depression. He was a renewed man, speaking of finding God once more. Interesting, well, in light of his waking up from the blackness that had been consuming him, we dubbed him Bishop of Altmark, and once again instituted the Bishopric that once stood in those lands. Hopefully he will do a far better job than the last.

October, 1079 -

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

After many years of revolt in Wolgast, it is time to meet partway. The damage done is causing a slow, but steady drain on the coffers, and when Heinrich comes of age soon, we do not want to leave him dealing with a popular revolt. We will sit with the pagan farmers and give in to some of their demands.

December, 1079 -

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Pommeranian tribes, emboldened by a recent alliance with the Swabians, declare war.

Furthermore:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Austrians have declared war on Danzig. As we already fight in that realm we join them in this war, moving to intercept their troops as they pass towards Austria on our way through Pommeranian lands.

After the sound defeat we gave their troops, the Chief of Danzig offered a great sum of money for us to leave their lands in peace, which we gladly accepted to focus upon our real enemies to their west.

The money came at just the right time, we had underestimated the Pommeranian alliance with Swabia. The Swabians rushed out of nowhere across the countryside and sieged Brandenburg. Our men were deep in Pommeranian lands and could not return. Easy come, easy go. They demanded the money we received from Danzig's chieftan.

We gave it.

October, 1080 -

The payoff to the Swabians was worth it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The campaign completed successfully. The Tribe of Pommerania is known now only in legend.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And already they complain of being led by us. A revolt is what they want? Then a fight is what they shall receive. We will convert their lands.... by force.

Historian's note: Here again we have a multi-year gap. It seems the majority of focus was placed upon the final years of Heinrich's teachings, as well as reconstruction of the war-torn lands of Pommerania to the Northeast of the Duchy's capital. There is but one last note, instilling their faith in the new Duke of Brandenburg.

Duke Heinrich, my liege -

As a loyal yeoman farmer of Altmark I forswear my allegiance to ye, as I had to your noble father (may his eternal soul rest in peace...+).

Ten years ago, my own father sided with the late Duke of Brandenburg during the reclamation of our fine province from the foul Bishop.  When the province was returned, our land was granted to us by your vassal in exchange for our loyalty and we have grown very successful as farmers since.  To this we owe him great gratitude.

Our hectares of crops are heavy with grain, and our cows are fat with green grass.  Blessings be to your glorious rule!
