So, is this standard procedure?

This is a turtle shell helmet.  It is still alive.  It is decorated with hanging rings of helplessness.

Pets on heads and shoulders seems to be standard practice.

Fascinating culture, the dwarven one.

Parrot style no matter what pet.

Atleast it's not in his trousers.

Hey does that O look like a turtle shell to anyone else?

Pets that are vermin (turtles, rats, flies, anything really) are always carried on the head.

Because it's so amusing to hear stories of the last recruit, pressganged into defending the fortress, making the critical shot that saves all the battle-hardened veterans... then going crazy because the cats have filled the dining room with miasma.

I believe I've seen screenshots where they're on other parts of the body as well. Might default to head in the first case, though.

oh?

Now I seriously have to capture and tame lots of vermin in the hopes of having a dwarv wandering around completely covered with them.

Progress: Zasit Whipsplatter the metalsmith has adopted two turtles.

The first turtle started on his head, once he adopted the second they both stood on his left shoulder. Moments later one is on his head the other on his right shoulder... and then back to the left one.

It seems that the animals move about pretty freely on top of him.

Edit: He now has 3 turtles and in spite of there being 3 additional turtles available for adoption Zasit refuses to adopt more than the ones already crawling around. Since the turtles are carried as EQUIPMENT there might be a limit to how many you can have.

Will a turtle on head replace existing equipment?

And, more important, will it add to the dwarf's armor protection? No more turtle shell armors, but live turtle armors!

Then after the first sparring accident happens, and a weapon actually connects with the armor, the dwarf tantrums for the death of several pets, swinging with a masterwork obsidian sword.

nawh its most likely just a separate layer.

I didn't have any sand on the map and I'm now trying to reclaim a sandy place over and over but none of the friggin dwarves like vermin. I want to find out if a dwarf will store his pets in a terrarium/aquarium that he owns. and if he that way can carry more than three pets.

I also want to torture him and see if he throws a tantrum and flings his pets around.

Update: You can tell a dwarf to throw his pet vermin in a pit or in a terrarium/cage/etc. However this will make him go mad. Either a fellow dwarf will snatch the animal from his shoulder and race him to the terrarium and dunk it in - while he follows and picks the pet back up ... or he himself will go and put the pet in and then retrieve it .. and put it in.. and retrieve it... into infinity.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

Now we just need a Pikachu mod, name a dwarf Ash, and have that dwarf wear a pikachu on their shoulder.
Shit this could be epic.
