I started a new fort today in a Haunted area, hoping to have some Fun(usually I play it safe, which leads to boring, if prosperous, fortresses). It was next to a brook, but otherwise had no water on the map, so I wasn't really worried about skeletal fish attacking me. Something else attacked my FPS though...

A waterfall. I never had one before, and when I first noticed it in the southern part of my map, quite a ways from my fortress, I thought it was kind of neat... until it started flooding, and water went everywhere, cutting my FPS in half. Down to 50 with just 7 dwarves(normally it starts falling at around 60 dwarves, and that's with a magma pipe and river). I ended up abandoning it just because I didn't want to deal with the low FPS. It was disappointing, to say the least.

70 is pretty good for me... ~40 for a mature fort. But 50 with only 7 dwarves? Come the first migrant wave, it would be much lower...

My FPS has been hovering around 5 to 15 for a while. Nothing's too low if the drop is gradual enough to get used to.

For me 40 is megafast (at start usually), 10 is fast and 5 is normal. 3 is somewhat slowish, though 

When I have 5 FPS, I'll just increase the speed of every creature in RAWs. everyone moves faster, everything does not, so it gives cool matrix-style crossbow dodging goblins!

At embark I'm normally getting max FPS, bar major water flow. I have no idea what you guys are having problems with.

Mind you, my computer turns into a miniature sun as soon as I get 20 or more dwarves, so yeah.

I can chug along pretty happily till around 70 dwarves.  Then it starts to drop a little bit.

My Fortress of 393 can get up to like 15 if a lot of them are idle (190+).  As soon as the miners strike the earth though and generate hauling jobs, it plummets to probably 2-3.  I don't have any large fluid flow though and that can take up an absolute TON of frames.  I've embarked on 6x6's with lots of rivers and what not and been at like 60 right from the start.
