*SPOILERS* HFS vs. raging river... bets anyone?
« on: February 17, 2010, 06:03:18 pm »

Although I’ve had plenty of abandoned forts, had my first loss recently in a 2x2 map (huzzah for 150+ FPS :D).

While playing with the Dig Deeper mod I generated a 3x3 map that claims to have flux, a river, a chasm and *other* things. Being a filthy cheater I sought out the chasm using stone sense and then sent an exploratory shaft in preparation for a waterfall project. I lost the last game when a dead immigrant (goodness knows how it got there) sent my entire fort rushing into the bottomless pits and the mandibles of antmen for the loot, so this time the shaft entrance was adjacent to my fort entrance and a river.

It wasn’t a chasm/bottomless pit.

It was something rather more... fun...

Anyway, after realising what I’d mined into and seeing my miner was being pursued by “fun” things I ordered him to dig a channel between the staircase and the river. I’ve now know idea what’s going to happen. Has the current bought me precious seconds to wall up the exploration shaft, or does it’s connection to the river mean that I’m going to be inundated with fun?

There’s a small amount of magma down there (which is what piqued my interest in the first place), so I’m half anticipating everything below to be encased in obsidian soon.

Suggestions/thoughts?

To put things in perspective, I have no military whatsoever and it’s early summer.

I have no idea. I just know that the HFS can't drown.

Tentacle demons can drown. Frogs can swim and SoFs evaporate all water around them, but tenties can definitely drown.

Is there a *drowning* message in the wounds section, or is there no indication untill they die? The tentacle demons are floating around quite happily along with their (living) Orc/elf/peasant attendants.

If a creature is drowning, its name will be flashing blue when you look at them and it should say DROWNING in the wounds screen. It's probable that the water you're flooding in is pouring right into the pits, thus remaining too low to drown anyone. You're going to have to find another way to kill them, I'd guess (or a way to cover up the pits).

i suggest you find out what kind of HFS is in the pit, then seal up the pit.  build a thin hallway where you will be mining into it, then fill the hallway with caje traps.  then go into the raws of the HFS you have and delete [trAPAVIOD], then add [PET_EXOTIC] and [trAINABLE]. You know what to do from there......

hehe, im so diabolical it hurts.......

Did they kill any Dwarves? If so, taming won't stop them.

Seal it off and engineer a cave-in.  Cave-ins kill everything.  They're like magma, but less glowy.

That's no fun. If you've got demons that can't fly, you can do so much with that - dig a path towards a pit, then place sacrifices in there and cave-in the entrance to the pit shut. From there you can dump as many critters as you like in without having to worry about them breaking free through a door or something. And that's just one example!

To take care of the head demon, which CAN fly, just dig a path down into it from above and set up your military to ambush it all at once when it emerges. It'll be the only one to path up, and from there you've got new playmates to have fun with.

No, you can tame dragons and hydras without any problems.  Those come already named...

Chances are, the clowns have dwarf kills just by being in the funhouse with the ... The 'audience'.

I'm curious what the barely conscious ai wrote about.
Well that went better than expected.  He went nuts and punched a rabbit to death, then the dogs and the whole dining hall ripped him to shreds.

wall it off.
make 80-100 crossbow bolts from HFS ore
stack 4-8 marksdwarfs behind a fortification looking over a killing room.
in the room chain up a bunch of sacrificial goats
start the ball

since you have no military, train up the marksdwarfs a bit first with bone/wooden bolts at archery targets or any other target that presents itself.

That magma tile in HFS is one of the coolest things about it.  If you are on a magma-less map it is fun to try to clear that area to get to the magma.
