I guess this is kind of like driving.  My dad always says to expect everyone else on the road to be an idiot.  Incidentally he's never been in an accident while my mom has on several occasions, most of which weren't her fault, but might have been avoided if she had been a bit more paranoid.

Also, if they would just sell you the game outright instead of Steam latching on to you  like a lamprey and holding it hostage, this wouldn't be a problem.

And if the people who did the phishing would be hauled into court for one count of attempted fraud for every email they sent to a valid address, and one count of fraud for every successful account steal, you'd see a whole lot less of this kind of activity.

I mean, dude walks into a gas station and steals a pack of cigarettes, suddenly there's a police bulletin. Dude steals ten grand from a bank, Interpol starts questioning his old girlfriends. But if a scammer blasts half a million Steam accounts with a phishing link, or a CEO makes some shady stock deals and scams a few million dollars from his shareholders, and nothing ever comes of it.

Thanks for the warning. I wish you guys get your accounts back, this is really bad...

Can't they do that thing with a warning when you follow a link that lead outside the current hosted site? Most professional forums and sites do this now to prevent this kind of phishing.

How about we drag Phishers out onto the street and shoot them? They hung horsethieves, these people seem little different.

Okay, I just realized I made some stupid moves, and blamed Steam for some of them, though there are still a handful of things Steam did I wasn't happy about (mostly delays).

Seems I didn't get phished, hacked, or anything. Rest of the story is in the Sad thread. Talk about human error. I'm taking the safe road in settling my situation.

Short story:
We were all right, and we were all wrong. It's up to the jury to decide how much and where we were on what. I'm just going to pay my "Fine" ((sale) price of 'missing games') and not mention it again if possible.

Because horsethieves stole peoples livelyhoods, depriving them of transportation and a way of feeding themselves.

No matter how fun a game is, you're not going to die without it.

No. Its just that the dude that stole a pack of cigs got caught by physical evidence and witness testimony and it originated in the United States. The scammers are hardly ever caught. Occasionally you'll read about someone getting busted for internet crime but more often than not they originate in Russia where the internet is literally the wild west. I had a friend that was able to track down the exact place of residence of a Russian hacker that hit his company's website. He forwarded all of the evidence to the Russian authorities. They promptly filed it in their circular filing bin (thats the trash can, if you don't know).
The FBI will act on cyber crime if it fits within their jurisdiction in the United States.

It is also extremely annoying and a pain in the ass... imagine if you had to hit a button along the lines of 'I understand I am going to a new website' everytime you tried to browse somewhere new? Keep in mind the Steam browser is a browser. Not a closed application.

Yeah, I got forwarded this from Janet's stolen account, I promptly messaged everyone on my Bay12 friend's list to watch out. Sucks that it's hitting everyone else as well :/

Message is just LOL WTF, and then it links you to this website.
The website address was something like www.steam_community_com/randomshitIdon'tremember.cz

I only clicked on it because I had faith in chrome. :P Logging into the steam community look-a-like page would compromise your account, not just visiting the website.

Someone in cz land has a lot of time on their hands and is an A+ script kiddie...

There ya go:
Czechoslovakia

Not in the US and I highly doubt anyone there cares, therefore the perpetrator will likely never get caught or in any sort of trouble.

My friend had this happen to him some time ago. Steam were pretty quick about recovering his account.

My one piece of advice is to threaten that hosting company with a law suite under the grounds of them allowing phising hosting.

Ah, so stealing hard earned money isn't stealing livelyhood. "Oh, its just a car, probation" "Oh, its just a tv." Screw that. How about we just cut off a hand, that's not gonna kill them.

I don't know what kind of barbaric society you live in, but too be honest, i'm going to say that they should be put in jail for a predefined term of sentencing, up to 10 or 20 years[Even 20 years is a little harsh.] for a mastermind phisher-The death sentence is too harsh for something like this, or even cutting someone's hand off, or inflicting physical pain, too be honest.

We don't cut off hands because thats barbaric and stupid, and assumes that anyone who ever commits a crime is inherantly evil and irredeemable.

And yes horse thieves were alot worse than just stealing money, TV or cars beacuse back in the wild west when they hung horse thieves people lives days apart. Without their horses they were pretty much stranded. Without their horses they couldnt farm properly.

If your car gets stolen you can get a bus, or a train, or walk. If money gets stolen you can get more. It's not a matter of life and death.

I guess I just think its incredibly short-sighted and ignorant to say we should punish people for theft with murder and mutilation. Note: I'm not saying these people shouldn't be punished, just that theft, in the grand scheme of things, isn't the worst thing that could happen to someone.

I live in america, and commute 30 minutes each way to work. My car has been stolen twice, and both times they wouldn't even press charges cause they were 17. Both times I've had to do pretty major repairs, and both times I had to borrow a neighbors car. Due to where I live and bus schedules, it would take an extra hour and a half each way to take public transportation. I live pretty much day to day running my business, and the costs of lawyers, towing, time off from job, repairs, and other expenses probably means I'll be missing rent sometime soon from the latest time. All so some 17 year old punk could "joy ride". Oh, and I work 12 hours a day, plus hour normal for transit. So yeah, I feel SOOOO bad for those thieves.

As for prosecuting the phishers, yeah, I know it won't happen.
