Micro: I recognize your points and I'll answer them as best I am able, but without intending offense I have to say that when you make points, they need to "have a point." Some of these don't seem to.

1. Yea, there was no hype for Dead Space. It was barely advertised. It developed its reputation postrelease, not from advertisement nor hype.

2. Yea, the graphics are excellent. They demand a lot from the consoles, much more than most contemporary games. That is why some computers than can handle other games can't handle Dead Space. But let's not beat a dead horse, he's been only reading into whatever gives him an excuse to argue. Any legitimate answer will be ignored. Think rabies, not logic.

3. Yes, I really think they won't. They don't. They both have livings to make, and no one suggested that the game rode on hype. There was nothing resembling Spore on any level, and no one suggested anything along those lines. I don't see where this fits into the conversation.

4. I just made a point of saying that the game was approved by both professionals and casual gamers. So I don't even see what you are responding to nor getting at with that.

I'm just saying a lot of the complaints were probably kept out for various reasons. If you look for overwhelming praise, you can find it for almost anything, if you look for hate, you can find hate. I expect dead space to have more fans but i like pointing out it's faults.

Aaaaaanyways, I adored Dead Space. Me and a few of my buddies rented it for the weekend as we have a tradition of playing Survival Horror games together in the dark. It only took a few hour to easily become one of our favorites, up there with Fatal Frame and Condemmed 2.

Skipping over references to the troll and trolling as much as possible, so as to avoid further derailment. I hope you don't mind the editing in the quote.

I looked up Fatal Frame, but the recent title is Wii-only. Upsetting. I've actually heard of Condemned 2, but I didn't know anything about it so I looked it up too. Looks interesting, you recommend it for a rental? I have a couple of friends who loved Dead Space and Silent Hill (one of them introduced me to Dead Space) and I would play it with them if you do.

Have not tried.  Was kinda interested in trying it, but not overly so, as I'm not too into scary.

But, I saw a LP of it.  I was told it was supposed to be scary?  Even taking into account the guy riffing on it...  I mean, I heard ammo was in short supply, but he seemed to have -very- adequate stocks for his telekinetic circular saw.  And while a telekinetic circular saw is awesome, I thought it was kind of silly - plus, it and the plasma cutter being ranged weapons was kind of uncool too, considering how awesome the melee animations are, on top of that thing where they were supposed to be tools.

Though, it was pretty worth it for the part where he fought the

to Yakety Sax.

I dunno, I probably would've been scared as hell playing it, but from what I saw all the press I read about it was hype.  I read someplace that there were intense moments like having to go through a shop console while stuff skittered around out of sight in the darkness, and that monsters would hide in the darkness, out of site.  But I never saw anything like that, and the monsters seemed to just beeline for you.

And they're toning down the scary for the sequel, too, right?  That's pretty uncool.

Condemned is where i got my "if they can kill you easily, you will be scared to encounter them" theory.

OK, I already gave my opinion on the game in my old video game review topic, but here is a good a place as any to give my (less-than) professional option on Dead Space.

The plot (as you know) features the titular engineer (or: not a Spess Mahreen) Isaac Clarke, who is sent to the unresponsive Ishimura with the supportive cast and red shirts to fix a communication array. The shit hits the fan very early in the game and starts a series of unfortunate events as you run back and forth between the Nostromo, amassing more gibs and spare limbs than a Vietnam movie set. The plot itself is a bit cliche (but what isn't nowadays?) but it makes it up with setting and creepiness. the problem is that, after the first few chapters, it becomes harder and harder to keep that scariness when you'd have enough ammo and health packs to last you the whole game and the first weapon is the only one you really need (although I can't advise against getting the ripper), even on impossible I found it a little too easy.

I honestly found the controls just fine, since it's already been run through another classic Resident Evil 4. I actually applaud with what they did with the HUD, allowing to get all of the details of the Ishimura. Graphics were...you know what, screw the graphics, if I cared one spittle about graphics, I'd just throw away my Xbox and watch Event Horizon over and over. The scare chord is one of the more overused cliches in horror games, but I could have sworn that it play when there was no monsters in the room, so I looked it up and apparently the scare chords aren't scripted event, which I guess is pretty cool it there weren't played so often. I've said it before that horrors now longer try any deep suspense and instead are packed with attempts to simply startle the viewer/player. I'll at least give Dead space a B- for effort, as atmosphere is rather creepy (although I've seen enough boltgun gray and flickering lights to last me a lifetime, so it loses some pinch) and there are some actually horrifying parts (being chased by the regenerator), but by the end it become less survival horror and more adventure shooter with really ugly monsters.

Overall, I give Dead Space a thumbs up, but unless your the %100 completion type a person I'd advise renting before actually buying. The lack of replay value puts a blow to the game, but there's a lot in the game to actually look over. So while you may only play the game twice at most there's still plenty to find. As for predictions for the squeal, I admit I'm really gitty over what's to come.

I looked up Fatal Frame, but the recent title is Wii-only. Upsetting. I've actually heard of Condemned 2, but I didn't know anything about it so I looked it up too. I'd definetly recomend it. Condemned 2's combat system and first person perspective really goes well with it's horror aspect. The close combat feels visceral and does a good job of making you feel like you're being attacked while the first person perspective helps with immersion. It's got a great atmosphere and I've barely ever been more scared in a game then when I was being chased by the *Redacted* later in the game.

It has some flaws compared to the first though. If you aren't familiar with the plot of the original Condemned you play a Cop investigating a serial killer. This adds up to cool little "Detective" gameplay moments sprinkled throughout the game where you collect evidence and form conclusions with whatever you've collected. They were a fun break from the horror aspect of the game and really made you feel like you were tracking a killer. Sadly that feature was neglected in the second, it felt more like something slapped on near the end of developement then a real game feature.

Another thing I found a little disappointing was the plot in Condemned 2. Like I said earlier, in Condemned you're a cop chasing a serial killer, it was all grounded in reality. In Condemed 2 someone on the dev team must have gotten into some sort of controlled substance as they decided to throw in a cult obsessed with sound and give you (And I'm not joking) the ability to scream so loud you kill people. It just gets ridiculous near the end. In Condemned the final level consisted of you running for your life through narrow corridors being chased by a serial killer. It was a masterpiece of suspense and down right crap your pants scary. In condemned 2 the final level consists of you on top of some structurally impossible tower screaming at the boss to kill him. It feels like halfway through Condemned 2 they decided to stop making a horror game.

It's all easy to overlook if you're playing with friends though!

Interestingly, Armok's name actually originates from arm_ok, a variable in one of Toady's earlier games that kept track of how many of your arms weren't missing.

Wow, so the paragraph of commentary I read, including "later on you can make people's heads explode by screaming at them" was not just critical sarcasm. It was true...

I may try Condemned if it's for Xbox, but after that I don't plan to go for Condemned 2 :)

Back on-topic: I just watched the Dead Space movie, and there are many, many large discrepencies between the two. It's generally what happens when you create anything with a developing mythos and involve multiple people and multiple projects. A good example is Space Odyssey; nothing was set in stone :)

It looks like they gave a group of writers and a mediocre anime director a small budget, a general plot with a few specifics, and said "make a promo!"
It's not bad, but it's not really good either. Now I see what someone meant earlier when they were upset by the plasma cutters being ranged in the game; a beam-sword plasma cutter would have been tight. It also would have been suicidal to try to use :)

I really wish the sequel were developed with the new xbox upgrade in mind (the one that has motion tracking and will probably sink the Wii). I'd love to grab a piece of plastic and have Isaac mimic my movements like a freakin' samurai. Anyone have some data on the new version? All I've seen/heard is rumor stacked on more rumor and sprinkled with a little bit of nostalgia.

The new game would have to be radically different to provoke the same response, and considering that the original was "too smart for most people, and utterly too frightening" they will probably dumb it down in complexity, detail and terror/thrill in order to make more money. Let's face it: We can demand smart, involved games with careful attention to detail and shit-yourself-scary elements, but these people need to make money and they will cater to the general public first.

Eh? Judging on what I've seen, the squeal is going to be an improvement.

When an OP loses control of their topic and becomes part of the problem, we have to lock the thread.
