Scary enemies in games
« on: February 16, 2010, 03:24:11 pm »

While playing half life 2 for the bazzilionth time, i reached the end of ravenholm, in the mine just before that decapitator mine cart when I hear that all too familiar rattle, I spin around and blast the source of the sound, who had been sitting conveniently at eye level and continued my merry way. Just as i exit the room, i hear a loud explosion and am smacked against the wall. Confused as to how a combine soldier sneaked down here to grenade me, i look back and see a bunch of scorched metal shard lying around. Then it dawns on me that in my urge to get rid of the tiny, camouflaged alien rodent, i apparently missed the bright red barrel it was sitting on and had been in that room for my 10 or so previous runs through the area too, or at least failed to register that bright red barrels are not to be shot at at point blank range.

Furthermore, I realized that 90% of my use of grenades and thrown explosive barrels had been against them and not the zombies, which i rarely used anything heavier against then thrown sawblades or bricks. Well, some double barreled shotgun blasts against the carrier zombies. Which were always the first zombies i shot at.

So now I a wondering, how did Valve create an enemy whose destruction I prioritize over anything else, even my own survival? They aren't particularly dangerous, in fact they can't even kill me directly except by gently tapping me for half an hour until i fall off a ledge, they give ample and very clear warning of impeding attacks and never ambush, their stature isn't any more imposing then that of my cat and they aren't any harder to deal with then their regular stubby legged brethren.

Because Valve are the last surviving gods of gaming, after Bullfrog, Blizzard and now Bioware have been devoured by the corporate machine.

EDIT: Last surviving gods of gaming in the corporate world, rather. I'm afraid that Bay12Games is still the leaders of the Pantheon. ;D

When I think of opponent I want to kill with extreme prejudice out of fear I think of some of the monsters in NetHack.

An early scroll of Genocide against Nymphs or Soldier Ants can give you the edge you need to get a weak character past mines End.

Try playing STALKER series. There are some seriously scary shits there.

I am so easily scared in video games that it doesn't even need to be scary. I don't play that many scary games anyways, but it's probably whatever I'm fighting in the dark. For example, that one part in Half-Life when you're in the pitchblack tunnel with the zombies. Also, Giant Mole Rats in Fallout 3. You don't hear them coming until they pounce.

Yes, you do. They chitter loudly and make a shuffling sound as they run towards you. Or something, I don't remember the exact noise, just that you can hear them well in advance.

Fast zombies in HL2 used to leave me frantically spraying fire in their general direction, and the poison headcrabs. Snorks and bloodsuckers in Stalker: SoC even more so, except with much less effect because both can soak up a metric shitton of ammo, and tend to move around in a very random, jerky fashion while tearing you to shreds.

Penumbra. Most definitely the zombies in Penumbra Black Plague. Their voices...... argh.... they run after you, you cant kill them, and they are pretty damn smart. They truly scare the crap out of me.

O please mole rats are ugly but are the least of your worries. Get the stick and 2 hit all of them.

The scariest enemies in a game have to be the things from dead space. The scariest game has to be the F.E.A.R. series.

The things that make things scary is knowing they can kill you easily, and coming out of no where. Otherwise it's just nervousness.

Or one hit them: if you back off after the first blow their head explodes after a few seconds. Although shooting them is easier.

The Tuurngait zombies in Penumbra: Black Plague.  They mumble what I believe might be English, but I could never make out any specifics, they're absolutely hideous looking, and they carry flashlights.

You have no means of fighting back.  There's only one spot in the game where you can kill a zombie, and those of you who played it know how that turns out.

Spoiler: How it turns out (click to show/hide)

Since the only way you can survive them is hiding, and they can see light sources, you have to turn off all your lights and run.  This leads to chases through pitch-black hallways and tense moments hiding behind boxes and the like while horrible pale shambling things search for you.

Apparently I was ninja'd by Labs.

Also, FEAR isn't scary at all.  It's the opposite of scary.

Scary little girls aren't scary, "x jumps out at you" isn't scary, stuff popping up on the screen for a second isn't scary.

The latter may be startling, but startling is to fear what lolsorandum is to comedy.  Anyone can do it, if it's not expected it might have some positive effect, but it's very bottom-rung.

Penumbra tears FEAR to shreds as far as scary goes. The druggies in Condemned are also scary but the walking, exploding dolls in the second one just freak me out. Nyahhh... :'(

Women waits in lit elevator for you to turn the power back on, you go to control room, through the window you see the little girl walking behind the women and the door closes. It's freaky.

Also when you go down a ladder, you turn around and she is standing RIGHT THERE.

The timing and AI for when you're looking at things is amazing. It's like they know where your going to look.
