And yes, most of the enemies in SS2 are scary. Awesome game, but it doesn't work on my PC. Someone told me it had to do with having a multi-processor...

Yeah, SS2 doesn't like dual-core (or more, or multi-threaded, for that matter...) processors. Try assigning only one core to the game, it worked for me last time I played the game.

And another scary enemy. The Poes from Ocarina of Time. They, and that guy who buys them, always kinda creeped me out. Probably because you can DRINK them.

How about Pyramid Head from Silent Hill 2? The first(?) time you see him, he's raping a pair of dead Mannequins.

can't quite remember but isn't the first time you see PH at the other end of a barred hallway staring at you?

It should be pretty fun though.

Yep, I think that's right. And it's not like he's particularly obscured or anything - you can shine your torch right at him and he'll just stand there. Kinda effective, really, much more than keeping his visage mysterious.

Er... how?

Start up the game (so that you come into the main menu), then fire up the task manager. right-click the SS2 program and choose "go to process" (or something similar, I have Swedish windows, so I'm translating freely here) then right click the newly selected process and choose "define processor usage" (or something). This should give you a list of your processor cores. Just untick all the boxes except the one for the processor core you want to use. Then see if it works!

Processor affinity is the option on the US one. And it seems to have worked. Thanks!

And I forgot about seeing Pyramid Head in that hallway. Still pretty creepy.

The sun in Super Mario Bros. 3.

First few times you do this chase as an inexperienced platformer player is a harrowing experience, and there is no point in which you can play this with somebody else in the room and not have them freak out.

I tried out Stalker: Call of Pripyat, the latest sequel. My computer was unfortunately not quite up to snuff, but I did get to experience some of the more... Frightening things.

For example, I make it to a safe house out in the middle of nowhere, by the train tracks. I go in, rest, recover a little, prepare to set out again to scavenge for anything worth money, or food.

Then I open the door to leave. I promptly closed it and went back to bed. Why?

Night in Stalker: SOC was dark. Night in Call of Pripyat feels like walking into a solid wall of black. There was just enough light from the building's windows out for me to make out the glowing eyes of one of those invisible bloodsucker monsters.

The flashlight illuminates as far as one inch ahead of the bottom of your monitor, if you point it straight ahead.

And then there are the blowouts. God help you if you're not near cover. The freakiest thing about the game is how often you'll end up being afraid of literally nothing, just a big empty deserted building. Because that's where the scariest enemy is.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth had some rather scary monsters and moments. I love that game.

Revenants from DooM 2, mainly from final doom, since they spring them in you so often. That sound is just terrifying.

While playing the original Half Life, in the first room with the barnacles and water, I was having trouble getting back onto land so I thought "I'll just use this rope to pull myself out of the water." It was a tongue. I freaked out and went apeshit on the thing with the crowbar. To this day, if I go through any room with barnacles I have a very strong tendency to kill the ones I have to get past rather than just hand them something and slip by while they figure out they're eating a barrel.

Also from the Half Life universe, the Hunters. Freakin hard to kill, even with something large and heavy like a water heater or engine, they hit like a truck and move about as fast as one, and they always attack in packs of two or three. Just downright evil.

Tip for hunters: Hold something infront of you, when they shoot it with flechets fire it abck at them, the flechets will detonate when it hits them.

There's somebody else that used to be afraid of Mario Ghosts? I nearly crapped my pants when I saw the giant one in Super Mario 64.

I know a grown female gamer who is still scared by the "haunted" levels in Mario games.  I laugh and laugh, it's not nice.
