Gaining miner skill.. without a pick?
« on: February 16, 2010, 12:20:14 pm »

I have one miner and one pick.  The miner has the pick with him at all times.

One of my other dwarves has somehow gained dabbling Miner skill.

?!?

Any idea how that happened?  I'm pretty sure it's happened before, but this is fairly early in the game, and I'm completely sure this time.  I've checked the wiki for how to gain experience, and it doesn't seem to have anything that would answer this.

I did make a few small dirt roads... could that be it?

You're sure he didn't have that skill on embark?

100% sure.  Among other things, you can't start with "dabbling" skill level.

Were they at any point in the military?

It's remotely possible that your miner stabbed an enemy and his pick got stuck, at which point some other wrestler grabbed the pick, yanked it out, and attacked with it, gaining some Mining experience.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

No, the miner hasn't been in combat.  Two of the other guys have... I'm not sure if that includes this guy or not, but the miner hasn't been for sure, so no possibility of that.

first off, lol
maybe if that is the case using an axe could grant skill up in the same fashion but doubtful

From the description of the event, I think that your copy of Dwarf Fortress was on drugs when this happened. That's surely the only logical explanation for a human werewolf with deadly farts dying from it's own excrement after slaughtering some goblins comrades.

I checked, and I think he may have been one of the ones who fought... but the other guy was definitely not the miner (I remember one of them got a minor spine injury, and it's not this guy).  They wrestled 2 goblin wrestlers followed by a goblin Lasher, and neither of my guys had a weapon at all (the woodcutters were on the other end of the map at the time).

So, IF it is because of combat with a weapon, the only possible weapon involved is a whip.

Well if the pick got stuck your dabbler could have twisted it once, got a point for it (???), then everyone continues on with their business.

I suppose an unlikely series of events could have caused your dorf to hold a pick for a few seconds, hit something, then continue on doing whatever.  Did your dabbler haul the pick after embark?  Did any caravans drop by?  Did your miner spar anyone or get wrestled by anything or kill any other creatures?

HA!  Gold digger, eh?  :-)

And no, the miner hasn't been in combat and hadn't relinquished the pick for any other reason up to that point.  Since I posted this, I had that miner drop it and become a hauler so one of my peasants could mine a large soil area, but seriously, first thing the miner does is "pick up equipment", and then mine, mine, mine until legendary (and a good while after that, clearing out a few veins).

This is really strange.
