Must-see df related stuff?
« on: February 16, 2010, 03:29:56 am »

Hello,

I started making small evangelization website with purporse of being THE link to give someone you want to get addicted to df.

For this, i would like to collect as much "cool" df related stuff, so I ask: What do you consider must-see? Important part of df player culture? Quotes not-to-be-missed? Features that just MUST be hinted on or even described.

Anyhow, here is the link of what i have so far: http://df.zweistein.cz/

Some kind of "Portfolio" for DF would be nice. I actually like the style of the page, and the fact how you show (this is... not how it looks; this is... how it looks with custom tweaks; this is... how it actually looks) the graphical part; if you went the opposite way you could scare away a lot of people, and Stonesense pic could interest them far enough to get over the "unusual" representation of the game world.

Boatmurdered is there, and it's great. I also think that Nist Akath deserves mentioning, probably not as much as Boatmurdered but still. Not because I dislike Nist Akath, but because Boatmurdered is written as a story which is easy to read, while Nist Akath is a long thread full of stories and the main storyline.

Heh, I can see a screenie from one of my forts on there. Neat.

To be honest, I doubt you can conglomerate 'the' link to get someone addicted to DF, but to help you on your way, here's a link to the succession/community/story Hall of Legends. And I'd suggest Boatmurdered and maybe Headshoots to experience the insanity of succession fortresses - personally, I don't think new players are going to want to get entrenched in monster threads like Nist Akath until they spend enough time on the forums seen Ironblood injokes and get curious enough to investigate. Until new forumites are addicted, I'd doubt they'll be able to wrangle such uberstories.

Now that I think about it, the TV Tropes page on DF is also a good place to get a good sense of the insanity/fun of the game. Also epic threads like merperson harvesting and so on, though offhand I can't remember others. Maybe the D for Dwarf section of the wiki as well.

You can always add some explanation of intricate, overly complex and utterly dwarfly traps. Knowing you can drown elves in magma after piercing their limbs so they can't escape, and any survivors end up with 'Socks' the happy dragon - this should convince people that DF is awesome.

Also, great site so far. Keep it up!

Make sure you mention the fluid dynamics system and all the awesome and/or horrible things that you can do with it. Right now there is only 1 mention of magma, and none of water :'(

Theres a typo in 'Aehm, seccond mode?'.

And also, 'sims: the bloody medieval edition' sounds pretty good hehehe.

EDIT: Put a link to the wiki and/or some tutorials. Getting them to start playing is one thing, but if they dont understand at all then most of them will quit.

I think typos belong to this thread too, right?

"Its like playing god with sentient legos." -> "It's like playing god with sentient legos."

Also while I think Mike Mayday made a great job at making a "casual" and quite nice tileset, the fact that it's mentioned and other tilesets are not is not really great. Now I see why so many people complain how they dislike some parts of Mike's tileset while they don't know there's an easy way to make changes by yourself or grab a different graphics set. You probably should make a separate page which shortly describes the ability to customize all tiles and avaliability of dozens of creature and graphic sets which can suit almost any taste.

Typo fixing is always welcome, thanks.

I did add screenie of another tileset, but did not go into any details mostly because it is fairly irrelevant for someone who does not actually play yet, and would in fact bloat page a bit.

I did not feel it is apropriate to bore would-be player with this when it is irrelevant to him yet.

Mayday gets mentioned mostly because it is downloadable in one pack that requires zero setup and can be easily downloaded. Guess link to tileset repository would be best option? Maybe some #16 or #17 based distribution with tileset?

I'd suggest a short block of text which says something about an ability to fully customize how your game looks, that should be enough.

Very nice page. I sent it to a friend of mine I've been trying to convince to play the game. Only problem is he knows he'll love it and that's the exact reason he's avoiding it.

A lot of people say that reading  Boatmurdered, even out of context, is what hooked them.

There's two ways to get into DF IMO. You get into the mechanics, or you get into the story. (Or you're awesome and you get into both.)

The very first part addresses that, eloquently. DF isn't terribly eloquent at times though, and that's why many love it so. So I would make another sub-head under "How do I play" that goes back to story, providing links to the best known DF LPs, and using choice excerpts to draw them in.

Just name candidates! (In meantime, scroll down :) )

Um, what is DF LP?

Well, I would put up links to Boatmurdered and other stuff like that. What got me into this game was hearing about the craziness of it all. You could use my "Origin of Dwarves" Paper if you want; people seem to like it.

Headshoots was a great one, with its uncontrolled magma releases, post-war division, a room beyond space, superweapons, etc although its not quite as good of an introduction to the game as Boatmurdered.

Oooh and a link to one of those fortress computers and the mermaid factory.
