Damn right we are! How can we trust anyone and their free game if they won't even go through initiation?! I say we rip out the heretic's entrails and feed them to the carp unless he loses a fort from accidental magma floods or a catsplosion.

I have never done this, and I have been playing for about... two years now? Your mileage may vary. I tend to lose more forts to suddenly getting inspiration for a new creature, and putting it in, and then having to restart all over again.

I tend to lose forts to getting bored from never screwing them up.  Well one time I lost one to a dragon...  Actually I didn't lose the fort as such.  There were still a few survivors after I drafted my entire population and had them all crush it to death.

And now we've even got a derail going.  Nice.

I lurked on these forums for about a year or more before I actually posted, and it was two years or so (since I had begun lurking) before I even played DF.

That being said, what gets me about this guy's posts is that they're snarky and demanding. Like, "Hey, I'm giving you something free, you should be thanking me"! Did you want a parade?
I never expected thanks at all, and since it seems that you treat everyone in such a hostile manner, it's all good.

Hostile manner? You come onto the forum posting what looks like a cut-and-paste description with the same tone as a door-to-door, fundamentalist zealot: "Please, just come to our <holy book> meeting. It will change your life". In other words, it seemed manipulative.

Instead of addressing concerns, you continue to build on them by pushing the link while simultaneously deriding a member of the forum:
"Zangi, if you have time to make that reply, you have time to read the detailed description of Battlement through the link. There's a brief game play video on that page as well".

I don't know anything about who you are or what you've done, but what I do know is that there are developers, both for-profit and not for-profit, who have more courtesy than that. I mean, hell, you could have said, "Hey guys, I just finished this game! Try it if you want", and you would've had most of us sold.

So let's get this straight - you quote a branch of this thread in which Zangi requests more information...

Also.. if you are advertising... at least put a lil more effort....

You don't make a convincing argument to click your link.  All I know is that its not really a rougelike and that it is a fantasy multiplayer wargame.  Screenshots help too.
Zangi, if you have time to make that reply, you have time to read the detailed description of Battlement through the link. There's a brief gameplay video on that page as well.

While in the same post requesting less information...

Furthermore, you interpret my attempt to anticipate and answer questions before they are asked as "manipulative".

Yes, I did respond rudely, but it's not hard to see why my patience is frayed.

Patience? Really?

You post about your game, which is fine, but you leave practically no details to interest anyone and then complain when people don't bother to follow your link. Even if your first post was just a cut-n-copy about the game that would have been better than the nothing you provided.

On top of that the only posts you've made on the forum are regarding your beta, and the release of your game, and you've stated you never even tried DF. So the _only_ reason you are here is to promote your game and you wonder why people are hostile?

This is why people have a right to be hostile.

Suppose I throw a party, and a total stranger to everyone at the party comes in and starts inviting people to come to his party. Is it difficult to see why that would be met with displeasure?

Except we're not in GD, we're in the Other Games section. This is basically where you might go looking for a different party in the first place.

Even so you wouldn't expect someone to be here unless they played the game (hence the Other part of the title), and to be honest I don't think it would have been a problem if he was reasonable about it. But that comment about having time to post so you can go read more when he can't be bothered to even cut and paste that more is a bit much.

Yeah I think that is part of the problem. There is not much said about the game on his site. There is the video - it's hard to tell what's going on. There is a small description and a list of a few features. That's it.

A few suggestions to Dathgale:

  • Put more info on your site. Start with an abstract; then progressively offer a more complex manual or elucidation of the game.
  • Advertise in the appropriate places. I noticed that you posted on gamedev.net; however, you posted in 'help wanted' & not 'your announcements' section. Know your audience. Do you think people looking for help with their projects want an advertisement? No post in the announcements section to target your audience: people looking for an announcement of a new game.
  • Post in the announcement section of tigsource.com. That forum like here respects respectful peers rather than arrogant advertisers. Gamedev & tigsource are good places to advertise & they allow it in the appropriate sections!
  • Which brings me to this point. Be respectful. Make an effort to join the community i. e. make some post not pimping your game. Have a good rapport with people. Maybe just put the link in your sig and let people check it out when they feel like it....
  • Have a thick skin. Keep trying. Try to improve. Don't be the Bullet Ball Guy.
  • Play Dwarf Fortress. Seriously you want to make games and you don't want to try DF? That's like wanting to be a painter and not checking out innovative painters like Kandinsky, Monet, Van Gogh, Pollack, Bacon, etc.

I'm trying not to be a downer, but rather be constructive just so you know. Good luck with your game.

@Bulletball.  Holy crap... If it weren't for war and natural disasters that could quite possibly be the most horrible thing I've ever seen...

I almost hope it gets made into a movie, just so that guy gets something at all out of his shattered dreams and life.  Poor psychopath.

I never said I wanted less information, but that's completely irrelevant. The point is that your response to Zangi was essentially "Look, stupid, I posted the link". In other words, -your- words, rude. That's a really poor way to open up communications with a community.
