Battlement is released
« on: February 15, 2010, 09:24:13 pm »

Battlement is what I call a multiplayer real-time graphical roguelike. Its theme is fantasy warfare - two teams of players select their classes and abilities and compete in real time for control of the battlefield. Read more here: http://battlement.hostcell.net/

I realize Battlement is very dissimilar to your typical roguelike, but it has many aspects in common with classic roguelikes since it is partly based on a certain popular roguelike called Castle of the Winds. The action-oriented portions of Battlement may not in themselves be appealing to you, however I urge you to also consider the complex strategic aspects of the game. In any case, you're not going to know for sure whether this game is for you unless you give it a try. Follow the above link, and check it out.

AD :(

Hasn't done anything on these boards except advertise for beta testers, and then advertise this release.

If you want us to try out your game, you should at least give Dwarf Fortress a spin.

Also.. if you are advertising... at least put a lil more effort....

You don't make a convincing argument to click your link.  All I know is that its not really a rougelike and that it is a fantasy multiplayer wargame.  Screenshots help too.

Zangi, if you have time to make that reply, you have time to read the detailed description of Battlement through the link. There's a brief gameplay video on that page as well.

Huh.  I gotta say--as unappealing as it looks in the movie, it's actually kind of a blast to play.  Maybe because I was beating ass the whole time.

Note that it is a Java applet, which means you don't have to download stuff. This should be advertised WAY more heavily because it lowers the barrier for "hmm, maybe I'll try this".

It's tile-based, which makes the video pretty hard to make sense of, but it works like this...your class has a certain amount of energy, and one move/attack = 1 energy.  You refill by two energy twice a second, up to a fairly low maximum, and you customize your character a bit with class and powers.  The hud is lacking and the manual could be better, but it's fun to smack people down.

Unfortunately, it's fairly dependent on low lag.  It's common to wait for your energy to recharge fully, and then do some fancy maneuver to stab the other guy in the side until he's dead.  But with five players I was seeing probably close to 300-400ms lag, and it's hard to pull things off like that.

Huh. So i guess your going to ignore B12, and only reply to comments about your game? I don't know man, because honestly, we don't want you here, if your not even going to give a game like DF a go, or even become  a active member of the community. Your just some purpose. By the way-Battlement sucks.

The game is actually not half bad. About like that C game, or maybe just a notch below.

BURN THE HERETIC!
Your flames, they burn....

But guys, look - you think I don't know what a roguelike is. You're wrong. I grew up on roguelikes, among other games. I haven't played Dwarf Fortress in particular, but you'll just have to excuse me for spending nearly all of my free time for the last 10 months putting together a new game that I hope some of you will like. Not to mention how many other good roguelikes there are. And given the variety of genres found on Bay 12 Games, I think it's safe to assume that this community likes some variety, and multiplayer is one kind of variety that Bay 12 Games has declined to provide.

For crying out loud, I'm not even trying to sell you anything. Give me a break.

That's your opinion. I respect it, but it's not the only opinion on this forum.

You have to realize, it does look a little bad with your only posts on this website being based around something off-site...

I can understand that you're trying to find testers/players for your game, but I think you might be approaching it the wrong way.  Although this is technically the forum for the "Bay12 Games" gaming company, its practical purpose is as a forum for one game in particular, namely Dwarf Fortress.

Bay12 (Tarn Adams) has indeed produced a number of experimental titles over its history, but for the past -however many- years it (he) has been devoted to the development of that one title.  All other projects have ceased for the time being, at least to our knowledge.  Most of the people here have only played Dwarf Fortress, or possible Liberal Crime Squad.  The more obscure titles are just that, obscure.

Since this forum is essentially dedicated to that game, and since that game is by all counts unique as a gaming title, it comes off as a little presumptuous to come in and recommend your own project without even trying out Dwarf Fortress to see if we might share certain tastes.

Furthermore, this used to be a very small community, so we've carried down certain interesting traits such as not trusting "outsiders" and trying to reason with adbots.  Quite frankly, you've been remarkably unfortunate with your timing...

I'm certainly not condoning hostile remarks against you, I'm just trying to point out why they're being made.

I'd really recommend you try out Dwarf Fortress.  Not only because it would grant you free (-ish) reign to "suggest" other games, but simply because there really isn't anything else like it out there.  And I mean that in a good way.

Hope this all gets sorted out with a minimum of bloodshed.
