So far you seem to have everything in order, defence-wise. build some walls and a drawbridge and you'll be fine.
uh, ive yet to figure out floodgates (not shown in the pic, but i've got a little tunnel mined out with a flood gate and lever, gonna see if, when the floodgate is closed, if water stops flowing underneath it), i think a drawbridge is a little over my head TBH (though itd be hilarious to get it to work only for it to fling an unsuspecting dwarf/kobold several tiles away though XD) >.>...
I think what's gonna kill this fort is the size of those bedrooms. I mean, damn! the king himself would feel put out by those monsters! dwarves can sleep comfortably in a 1x2 room with a bed scooted right up next to the door, though I tend to spoil mine with 2x3 rooms that please my eye with squarey goodness. I guess it's up to you though.
Welcome to Dwarf Fortress.
Make peace with your god.
like i said, i usually dont get too far to have to worry about kobolds and such (again, usually due to food shortages... usually abandon before anybody starves to death though >.>) and i knew the barracks sleeping room wouldnt work so i figured i'd get some rooms made and given that this is the first time ive ever attempted such a thing, i didnt know how big they had to be, though if all it takes is a 1x2 room to satisfy the dwarves, i might have been planning ahead unknowingly cause i just build some walls and separate the rooms a bit lol XD
also, back from kenpo (obviously, and before anybody asks, im only a yellow belt...) and shortly before i left i added 3 more dwarves (a cheese maker, a brewer, and a plant gatherer, cheese making is a moot point right now (no cows lol), and ive got a brewer and plant gatherer that are higher levels in those skills that i embarked with), made two squads (2 dwarves each) so ive got two patrolling the entrance and the other two will more than likely be trying to throttle each other while sparring -.-, need to work on getting them some armor...
would i get enough leather to make armor for at least two of them from a donkey, horse and 3 puppies (NOOOO!!! T_T NOT TEH PUPPIES!!!! but i cant kill the two that i embarked with though, since i dont know how long they take to reach adulthood and i need a backup should food run low >.>)? nvm, making bone armor for now, and ive got more than enough bones to make armor for all 4 army dwarves
also, thanks for the help everybody
really nice to know that the community is willing to help nubs like me who (for the most part) have no idea what they're doing
Edit1:almost forgot, when should i switch out the guard patrols? i could deal with kobolds ass-raeping my fort a bit better then i would a pissed off recruit causing a tantrum spiral -_-
Edit2: oh lawl, just saw a group of 5 Rhesus Macaque who would get close to the fort, then back away, then get close again, then back away again lol, waiting for them to att-never mind, they just stole the cave spider stuff the kobold my miner owned earlier had, along with an obsidian mug... meh, i could care less about that stuff (the two armed recruits who were patrolling the entrance decided it was a great time to go get a drink, so sadly, no monkey steaks tonight D:) im just glad they didnt steal anything of value lol
