Dwarf Fortress was shown to me by two guys I met at a church Camp I go to ever year, There was a meteor shower that night and I was sitting in the dining hall with my laptop, Watching the two guys play it,(It was version 31.25 at the time.. I think).. After getting it on my laptop and spending as much time as possible to get the hang of the game... And now I anxiously wait for the next release to learn/attempt something new.

I had heard about the game years ago and thought it was something I would enjoy, except I had heard the game had a learning curve like a sheer cliff.  Last April or May I finally broke down and watched a series of youtube tutorials by 51ppycup to get the basics down and then went in with the wiki for help and it's been lots of fun.

Boatmurdered was somewhere in there too, but I can't remember if I read it before or after I started.

12th visit to a thread dedicated to DF in a french forum from Canard PC (game mag) did the trick.
I did not resist looking at Lazy Newb Pack to see how DF evolved, and got embark in hours long playing sessions

A friend and house-mate of mine was reading (and re-reading) the wiki after discovering Boatmurdered (he was a goon), preparing to play the game for himself.

From the ASCII, I thought it was a roguetype dungeon delver, but after hearing about the elephants, miasma, and magma, I knew this was something more.

Not sure how I first heard about it. I suspect it was through TIGSource or similar but it might have been PCGamer magazine I suppose.

First time playing I genned a world, couldn't figure out what was going on, and stopped playing. Months later I was reading LotR for the first time and hit the Mines of Moria section, remembered DF, and wanted a piece of the action.
