I was playing DiscworldMUD (check it out!) and people kept talking about DF on the talker.  I got so fed up with all the chat I decided to check it out for myself.

My life ended at that moment, and a new life began.

Someone on Quartertothree.com forums linked to it years ago - back when the game was 2D. I read Boatmurdered and played some and then played more when the game went 3D and some time after that wrote me tutorials (75,000 page views on the first one and still getting a couple of thousand hits a day on them all!). I tend to get all fired up on DF for major releases then stop myself before the sequence of 3am bed times melts my brain.

TV Tropes. I read about it; it seemed like a charming game. I followed a link to the wiki, wiki walked everywhere, downloaded a few months after first geting hooked on reading about it (0.31.16, IIRC). And here I am now.

I first found it from roblox while it was 40d, tried a game. Quit, came back about a year later from the Yogscast.

In 2008 I was checking the Mount&Blade forums, there some guys were talking wonders about DF. Read the whole thread and was impressed at how many things you could do in the game. Tried it myself and died had FUN so many times that I postponed it for a later time so that I can learn the "mechanics" of the game in the dfwiki . Then found the captnduck videos on youtube and followed along and got totally hooked.

Ah, I remember the first time.  I was on the Let's Play archive, and then I found an entry called "Boatmurdered".  I...assumed that it was some seafaring game, or something. 

I started reading it.  Was utterly bamboozled by the "graphics", there was actually a sort of guide to the symbols on the first page, but the page did not load properly, so I couldn't read the guide.

But still, the storytelling got me hooked.  Then I saw that there were two sequels.  Headshoots, and Syrupleaf. 

My awe only increased.  I found the site, got the game, got really, really confused, didn't touch it for a few months, tried again, this time adventure mode, got confused again, stopped for a month or so.  Tried it, and I found that after a few tries, I could play adventure mode.

Still need to work on fortress mode though.  Even after all this time.
