I was playing Elona ( http://homepage3.nifty.com/rfish/elona_top.html ), and somewhere along the way, someone mentioned DF as being somewhat of a roguelike. I checked it out, got interested, and here I am.

It was 1 or 2 years before the first release (so maybe 5 years ago ?), while browsing for ascii games. There was a movie of a dragon attacking tons of dwarfs, and throwing fire. All that in ASCII !
The development log was already miles long, and even if it nothing had been released yet, there was a strong feeling that it would not be vaporware !

I am amazed that Toady is still spending that much energy on that project. And Threetoe must be a great support

I think I saw it first on Metafilter. I thought it was just another Roguelike, but gave it a go after seeing some people being really excited about it. It took an hour for my brain to reconfigure itself - I could feel it happening - and then the Matrix Vision kicked in and goosebumps covered my wretched body.

I used to play a lot of Zangband and once the above-ground areas were added I wanted to explore worlds, not tunnels. As a result I went back to ADOM which I used to play years ago and ended up reading about a proposed sequal with a random world editor which in retrospect was very DF-y. Impatient for a release I searched for random world creation and found URW. After playing for a while I found mention of DF began reading the DEV notes. This was just after the 2D-3D transition and the things mentioned in the Dev log were like nothing I've ever come across in game. My interest was piqued and the rest is history.

BTW, I'm a long-term lurker. Hello everyone.  ;D

I haven't been able to get any vomit this release. Not any I can pick up, at any rate.

Via Nethack, or rather this poll ("Which computer game other than NetHack did you play most in the last three months (August, September, October)?")

Spoiler: but 2010 necro! (click to show/hide)

I am not sure but I think it was Fall From Heaven forums where I first learned of this game. It was a short while after 40D was released in 2008 and I was fairly active there at the time.

To my shame I still used Windows back then.

Some other guys were talking about it while standing in line for the midnight release of Fallout 3.

Don't tell anyone that you can see their shadows. If they hear you telling anyone, if you let them know that you know of them, they will get you.

Got tired of seeing all these guys talking about "lava traps over their main hall," and "magma pillars" and so forth in Galactic Chat while playing Shores of Hazeron (<< free city builder/fps/sim/management/strategy/4x/mmorpg space game, realistic size galaxy, fly freely to any star you see in the night sky, no load screens, etc, considered by many to be "Dwarf Fortress in ‼SPAAAAACE‼, with plenty of ‼SCIENCE‼ being conducted all the time, awesome game), remembered something called "Boatmurdered." Looked it up, read the LP, looked up the wiki, read that for a couple days, downloaded the LNP, and here I am.

This was in January... I feel kinda bad, I've not logged into to SoH since the day I installed DF... Never even told my subjects in my galactic empire goodbye, lol. Oh well. Net-friend would have been promoted to Emperor months ago in my absence... :p

Hmmm... Got me missing my ringworlds now:p

Learning DF was easy after conquering SoH. DF definately has a steeper learning curve, but it was more of a gentle hill coming from SoH.

I tried it before Minecraft was released and didn't really get into it. I think I heard about it from PCGamer but I may be wrong. I got back into it later when PCGamer started talking about it again. I gave it another try and was hooked this time.

One of my friends found Dwarf Fortress on a "Top 10 Freeware Games" article on Yahoo several years back. Being a mac person though, I was only able to listen to his crazy stories until Toady was wonderful enough to come out with the first mac version (38b for those of you wondering), which I promptly downloaded. Since that time my friend has pretty much stopped playing DF, but I'm still sticking around (though I tend to be on the forums more then I actually play the game now :P).

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Can't remember; known it forever, just recently got around to actually -playing- the thing.

Probably Boatmurdered though.

TV Tropes.

I keep seeing references to DF so I checked out the DF page. I read it and thought "Jesus, this game let's me be a fucking god. WHERE CAN I GET THIS."
