I was playing WoW. In the third expansion, WotLK, they simplified fishing leveling (which was unfortunate, as I was almost skilled enough to fish in Northrend already). One of the fish you could get in the main city, Dalaran, was called a Sewer Carp.

Someone posted on one of the WoW wiki pages that dwarves needed to be careful around those sewer carp. After a few alliance players took offense, the guy linked a page to the DFwiki about carp. I followed the link here, and by following the guide on the wiki page fell in love with DF.

Got bored (about 10th time) with dungeon crawl and adom, then found dungeon soup then while searching for something similar stumbled upon this.

Ditto. I also watched EVERY SINGLE ONE of Captnduck's video tutorials. And then read Boatmurdered. My wife thinks I'm crazy but she puts up with it because this is free and not illegal (as opposed to "free" and illegal).

Tolkien had a great secret: The dwarves of Moria didn't dig too deep. A prominent dwarf with lots of friends started tantruming and, well, you figure out what happened next.

People that play Fall From Heaven would always talk about DF, so I downloaded it and messed around a little.  Eventually someone linked me to Boatmurdered and then I had to go and read the wiki and figure out how it all worked.  Special thanks to Maydays graphics set for making the learning curve a little less steep.

I found DF through the Taleworlds forum in 2007. Someone was running a LP, and through that LP I found boatmurdered. There really wasn't much hope for me after that. :'(

I think it's a vastly amusing thought that elephants are so afraid of heights that when Dwarves invented the Z-axis, they couldn't bear to face dwarves in combat anymore.

I found DF when i finally decided to Google it, /tg/ was (and still does to a certain degree) going on about it and they all (pretty much) loved it.

My friend found it when i told him about it.

A 7chan bloodline.

Me 8 months ago:  "F*** everything about that s***. No graphics, no direct control, time sink, and killing kittens?  No thank you my good sirs."

Me now:  "I can't kill those goddamn kittens fast enough!  Graphics?  You must be talkin' crazy, Willis."

I had been looking around for sandbox type games for a few days. I was on the URW forum and there were some people talking about boatmurdered. (There were also people talking about DF, but I didn't take notice. I was under the impression it was some kind of fantasy-themed action game.) I had remembered hearing people talk about boatmurdered before, and I felt kind of left out that I didn't know what it was. So I googled it.
I sat and read the entire thing, almost couldn't drag myself off the computer to go to bed. The next morning I downloaded DF.

Though it was the first ASCII game I had ever seen,(Never even heard of it before) it didn't scare me off. The opposite, I embarked immediately and called out to my family to come see this game I was playing.  :D (They thought I was hacking the computer for a while.  ::)) I thought it was the coolest thing I had ever seen. I had no idea how to play, but I gave my dwarves a few random commands. Then I realized that dwarves had personalities, likes and dislikes. I think I sat at the computer for 5 or 6 hours that night.

It was a bit of a random chain of occurrences for me. It all began when I bought the game Bioshock for the Xbox 360. My enthusiasm for the plot caused me to become one of those slightly sad people who look at reviews of a game retrospectively just to see if other people agree with them. I came across zero punctuation for the first time with Yahtzee's Bioshock review at the escapist magazine, simultaneously becoming a fan of both the escapist and System Shock 2 (but that's a different story). From the escapist magazine I discovered a link to "play this thing!", whereupon casual flicking through the site I discovered their article on dwarf fortress. Two initial attempts to understand the game, two years and many sleepless nights later, I now check the dev_now list on the bay 12 site every day just in case I missed something slightly interesting.

So to summarise, Bioshock got me into dwarf fortress.  ???

On Spring RTS forum.
There is a big sticky DF thread there in the offtopic section.
Spring RTS is an open-source RTS game engine if anyone is interested.
I know that a few more DF players came from there.

Initially? A friend did show it to me at work a good while back. Somewhere around 2003. I dismissed it because of the ASCII graphics and the obviosly steep learning curve at that time. The guy in question was always a lil on the 'crazy' side of things, so it didnt really surprise me at all that hes playing an ugly ASCII game.

Then about a year or two ago, i was browsing let's play videos on youtube and ran into the awesome video tutorials / let's play videos made by captain_duck. Watched all the 20 or so he had up at that time in one sitting, then i decided to DL the game and give it a try.

With his help, and that of the DF wiki, the game started to make sense and opened a wonderful new world of possibilities. The graphics pack of Mike Mayday also made things a lot easier, which was a big factor in actually enjoying the game.
