I was here before DF even came out. If I recall, the first I heard about Dwarf Fortress was when I read one of Toady's posts in a WWI medic thread. He gave a short description and I believe he also posted some mock-up images of the world map. I thought it looked pretty nice, but I didn't really follow the development of it as I was more interested in WWI medic at the time.

Eventually the first version came out and I enjoyed it although it was very confusing and I don't think I ever managed to get a fully functioning fort built, and back then there was no wiki (or at least I didn't know about it) so things we're pretty brutal. I put it down for a while and tried it again when it hit build 27 169 33b. I did a little better this time but I was still pretty bad at it, and it was still confusing. I put it down again and started playing again when it hit version 28 181 40d. I was a lot better this time around and was able to build many successful forts.

Now I've essentially mastered the game. :D

The Ice Cave's Steam group chat. We're like the only steam group that uses it.
Too bad none of them play DF anymore :(

Gamefaqs board, some guy called alien posted a dwarf fortress log on our zelda RP board, I was hooked as soon as a found out I could kill kittins for food (and learned how to dig down, the wiki didn't help)

Found a reference to the game in an arcane discussion on a game designers' forum. The reference was something like "Look how this is implemented in DF, but don't start playing the game or you'll be lost for society for a month". Naturally I immediately googled and found the game and the wiki. :-)

Seems to be the way with things on this forum; if an invention doesn't involve death by magma then you know someone's going to go out of their way to make sure it does involve death by magma... then it gets acknowledged as being a great invention.

I found DF while browsing youtube, I came across Captain Ducks tutorials and I watched every single one...

up to number 15.

I started playing around in Fortress mode wondering how the heck you were meant to dig, so I started channeling everywhere. It definetly took me a while to figure out the Z-levels.
I just ended up with a big mess, a few cave-ins and a bruised left arm.

I found it deep beneath the earth, buried in a block of basalt.

More accurately, I was introduced to it by a friend.

You bruised your arm IRL by playing DF?

Also I have no idea how I discovered Dwarf Fortress anymore... just knew I kept starting the game, embarking, not figuring anything out, exiting the game and deleting it off my HDD, then seeing someone talking about it somewhere and dling it again, then starting a game... this cycle went on about 20 times till suddenly it hit like wave of magma over an Elven caravan.  Boom eight hours were gone and I was exhausted.

My mate told me about the complexity of the game. I gave it one go and dumped the file. Two weeks later, I tried again. I haven't stopped playing since.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

TvTropes led me to Boatmurdered which led me to the game.

I was looking for a roguelike similar to ADOM.

A friend told me about it because I told him I was into NetHack.  Basically as soon as he started talking about the various forms Fun can take, I was all "I have to see this".  ASCII is good; embrace it.

Though to be accurate, DF isn't ASCII, it's IBM Code Page 437, one of several non-standard extensions to ASCII.  Just thought I'd throw that in there.

I can't recall for sure either.  I'm guessing I either saw it mentioned at Slashdot and googled it or read about it on the Ars Technica or Giant in the Playground forums, both of which have long running DF threads.
