My friend who likes weird games told me what he had been doing in this weird dwarf game.

The Toad hops in mysterious ways.
This pure mountain spring water is indispensable. Literally. I'm out of paper cups.

I read about it on TVTropes around 2009, I think. The descriptions of the various antics possible within the game intrigued me, so I gave it a try.

Unfortunately, the tropers had failed to properly communicate just how confounding this game actually was. After staring at my first embark for an hour and still having no idea what the hell I was looking at or how to make the little neon smilies construct a magma fountain, I ragequitted.

A few weeks later, I found the wiki, and thus actually got my first fortress dug out. 2 hours later, I learned the hard way that dimple cups are not edible and a few minutes later learned that starving dwarves tantrum, tantrumming dwarves can break floodgates, and that no dwarf -- tantrumming or otherwise -- can breathe underwater.

It was quite possibly the most fun I've ever had watching ASCII midgets get angry and drown themselves as a direct result of my own incompetence. I was hooked.

I was in churchcamp, And there was two people playing it,
Then I asked what it was, And they gave me the game.
After a few days of playing around with it.
I have not found a better game.

/v/ after I saw the design for a bloodpowered bloodspewing cannon (you know the one) in a thread, I instantly googled it and started playing.

I got fed up with my fortress, so I decided to kill everyone (abandon is for elves) with a cave-in.

OK, cave-ins were always pretty deadly, but with the new falling object damage they are downright brutal.  As far as I can make out from the logs, many people were killed by the flying bodies of other victims.  One baby's corpse ricocheted off three other people, two walls and the floor.

Through the fourms on Clonk.de
I found clonk while randomly searching the net, fell in love with it and bought the game. I saw someone mention DF on the fourm, I ignored it. When reading the tread over a week later, I said why not, and came here.
If not for Captain Duck and the utterly newby tutorial, and mayday, I'd not be here still.

I don't completely remember, but probably from RPG Codex.

However, even after I first discovered it I couldn't play it as the native text graphics were simply too harsh on my eyes.  I wasn't able to actually play until I discovered the graphic mods.  Prior to that I would just get a headache.

Yet another person who found it through TV Tropes here.  I kept seeing references to it under video games, and because I had never heard of the game before, I finally checked out the DF page to see just what it was.  As soon as I read the description of the game, and found out it was free, there was no possible way I could not play it.  It sounded too much like the sort of thing I like.

I friend of mine was playing DF once when I was visiting him, so naturally I asked what the game was and thats when I found it. Took me a while to start playing it as when I first downloaded it, it was still the old no Z-levels version and my ancient PC couldn't get through world gen. When I finally got a new PC, 40d was already out and I started playing it.

I bumped into a fellow videogame nerd at a festival in portugal, got into a discussion and he told me about dwarf fortress.

I was intrigued so I tried it out when I got home, and I've been addicted since.  8)

I found out about DF during it's last development cycle, a year or so ago.
A PC Gaming website, Rock Paper Shotgun, wrote all about it.
One of their staff had a DF story on the site. I read that, then everything else.
I checked out the forums, read the wiki. Then I thought about it.
Then I played it. Fun fun fun.

Through StumbleUpon, I think. This was sometime between the first 3D version and 40d.
