Boatmurdered. I was going through the Let's Play Archive one day looking for something to read and happened across Boatmurdered for Dwarf Fortress. I had never seen Dwarf Fortress before, although I had played Nethack so it was similar. I loved the story and have played it ever since.

I think it was the forum of a now dead browser game. The attached warning was something like "don't ever play this if you enjoy having a life".

I found the TVTropes article while browsing the site. It lead me here.

This.  I'd heard of the game some time before, and read how everyone who played it was insane and bent on torturing elves to death.  Then I read the Boatmurdered account on TVTropes.  Then I read the actual archive of it.  Then I downloaded the game.

This is one of the threads (or new threads asking the same thing) I like seeing necro'd now and then.  Nice to see where all the new blood comes from every year or so.

It's kinda like having a legends mode copy of your current fortress world to look up the history of the migrants.  Only it's easier, and it consumes less hard drive space.

I watched some of Jefmajor's Dwarf Fortress videos and got interested in playing it, I belive the version he was playing back then was 40d, where I could embark on towns and such without the aide of something like Embark Everywhere. I decided to try it and found it pretty hard at first, but then I came to enjoy it later on as I messed around with it.

Can't remember; known it forever, just recently got around to actually -playing- the thing.

Probably Boatmurdered though.
Yeah I read Boatmurdered before I actually started a fortress.

My first exposure to Dwarf Fortress was through Boatmurdered, though I don't recall how I found that.

Totally forgot.

I do remember being reintroduced by Penny Arcade, though. I had played it prior to that, but it made me start up a new fort (that survived).

But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Since my laptop isn't great w/ games (My desktop is), I use it for school and watching things, because it has a good graphics card, but a dinky little processor. While watching let's plays, I came across a legend; Jefmajor 'One F Jef'. His let's plays led me here, but until I was determined to learn how, I never really played it.

It amazes me that Dwarves can survive on 2-3 bee brains per season. That's like, two sesame seeds. But it's a Dwarf, so I guess it's like four sesame seeds.

I was screwing around on my little brother's Xfire account, chatting with his friends and whatnot, when one of them told me he was playing something called "Dwarf Fortress". He showed me some screenshots, and after checking out the site, the thought of it was always lurking in the back of my mind.

Eventually, I started looking through reviews, stories, tutorials, LPs, ect. and finally concluded that I would give it a try. Like always, my decision was a good one.

I found DF while poking around in TVTropes. Read it's description, got curious and got hooked almost as soon as I managed to figure out what I was looking at.

I googled "offline games like EVE-Online" since I was craving some spacey adventure and trading away from the whining masses that comprise said eve. Lo and behold I clicked a link to the eve-o forums where a guy had a list of some offline games similar to eve, at the end of his list he said, "oh, btw try this game called dwarf fortress." He said it wasn't really related to eve but that it was free, among the most complex games ever, and linked the DF forums and wiki.

I dl'd it, fired it up, couldn't figure it out and quit within 20 minutes. An hour after that I tried again, with a tileset, same result...a day later I played along with one of the nooby tutorials and now a week later this thing is CONSUMING MY LIFE...my thoughts and dreams are filled with biomes, flux stones, kittens, and zombie elephents...

I found out about Dwarf Fortress on the TV Tropes website first but didn’t actually look into the game until after reading the two part comic on it at Nerf Now in January of 2011.

During my gaming natural progression. After getting bored with the lack of customization and difficulty in current games, I found Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, and eventually got an addiction to Roguelikes. After playing that and Adom, along with games from Abandonia I came across a lot of mention of DF and then got hooked. I had played come across it once when I was about 15... could not work out anything and abandoned it
