Yeah.
HOW TO WIN EVERYTHING:
Build a regiment of ranged units.
Go next to a town.
Battle the town.
Attack it until you're in danger of being attacked by melee.
Flee.
Do it again.
???

That strategy doesn't work so well on the higher difficulties where you lose units in a retreat. Frequently all of them.

My winning strategy involves playing as High Men and waiting until I get Paladins.

Man, you lose units in retreats? :(

Also how do I get enough mad cash to fund my immense battalions of deathbringers?

City progress, and therefore gold and production, is primarily linked to improvements and secondarily linked to terrain.

If you want money, build anything that gives a percentage increase to gold. Bank, marketplace, farmer's market, etc. There are certain spells you can cast that can increase a city's gold output, primarily under the Life branch of magic.

Also, there's not really any downside to making more cities, aside from the simple maintenance costs for improvements and food cost to maintain population. So if you need more gold, build more cities, and link them together with roads.

Posted this in the other thread

By the way, I think this tidbit of info may be useful to you guys.

Quote from: The Manual
To build a new city, you first have to go to the production screen in one of your other cities (see City Screen) and click on the settlers button. When you have constructed a settlers unit (note that it “costs” a townsperson to build this unit), decide on the best location for your new city. Spend some time examining the terrain in areas that are clear of other towns. The terrain types within two map squares of a city map square (specifically, all the squares except for the four corner squares in the 5X5 area centered around the city) determine the maximum population for the city and the special resources available to the city; a synopsis of a city’s potential on a selected map square is accessible via the surveyor button. See the Surveyor, Terrain and Terrain Specials sections for relevant information.

This essentially means that you don't have to build your city directly on top of terrain features to get their benefits. When you right-click a city and look in the upper right you will see which parts of the terrain you are benefiting from. This means that even if your city is built on grassland you will still be able to build a sawmill if there's a forest nearby.

Also, building roads between your towns will open trade routes between them and increase gold income, I believe.

Abandonia has the manual for the game in a PDF.
Game manual

This game seems pretty cool. I'm still playing on lower difficulties till I get used to it.

EDIT: To get roads build engineers. If your race doesn't get engineers capture a town of high men or some other faction which can build engineers.

In case people don't know, you hit F1 for the "surveyor" that tells you what a potential city's max population and income would be on a certain site. Also, while you can't build cities too close to other cities, it is possible for the edges of their "zones" (the area from which they collect resources) to overlap. If that happens, each city only gets half benefit from that resource.

Engineers. You can build them from the start, I believe. They cost one food in maintenance, if I remember the details correctly.

Once you select them, you can have them build a road to a location. The road building thing isn't very smart so you'll have to navigate obstacles on your own.

Once you set the road, they will take several turns to build the road. More engineers speed up construction.

Once you have a road, you need to remember that enemies get the same movement bonus your troops do. Don't leave any cities undefended on any expansive road network. I've made that mistake several times, particularly in Myrror where the roads are enchanted and cost nothing to travel on.

It's important to note that depending on your school of magic, you can change the terrain around a city to improve its bonuses. City improvements can also increase the population limit as well.

Man, magicians rock. Excellent speed and incredible stopping power.
Anyway, I'm attacking some dude with 7 longbowmen and 2 catapults, all veteran... Catapults do decent damage against the walls. Knocked them down in 3 turns. Longbowmen just picked off all the paladins inside while they sat there. Pretty good.

What are the Warlord ability and Crusade spell? How can I get them?

Warlord is an ability you can pick at the beginning of the game or earn by conquering extremely high level monster lairs and dungeon.

Crusade is a global enchantment available to practitioners of Life magic. It requires a certain number of spellbooks, I'm unsure of the number.
