Ah ok, thanks.  Wonder if there's a mod that adds that to UFO.  That would be really really useful.

http://www.ufopaedia.org/  Probably the premier source of X-Com info

http://www.ufopaedia.org/index.php?title=Enemy_Unknown_Extended A pretty good catch all mod/patch, which has a door thing. I think it allows doors to be open. Not sure.

I became very badass at XCOM when I realized that the only collateral damage is from civilian deaths, and there are only civilians on terror missions. My spending on explosives increased significantly, though I think I also contributed significantly to global dimming.
Now become even more of a badass by allowing the civilians to be taken by the chrysalids on those missions. If I recall correctly, a dead chrysalid more than offsets the negative point value of a civilian.

Actually, while true, you do get more points by leaving the civilian alive in the first place.

A dead civilian is worth -30 points, while a killed Chryssalid equals 25 points, and a zombie equals 18 points. 25+18-30=13, so yes, you do come up positive in points. But a saved civilian is worth 30 points, plus you avoid the hassle of having to kill an extra chryssalid.

Well, I installed the mod, but now the game runs at superspeed.  Oddly enough it runs at approximately 12 times the normal speed, because the Geoscape goes at 1 min/sec when sec to 5 sec/sec mode.  :(

I think it's because it's not using Dos Box anymore.  Anyone know how to fix this though?

Is this a general X-COM topic now?

In any case, I've stopped my savescumming spree and started a new game, and things are going quite well. I recently assaulted a Sectoid Battleship with only Personal Armor and Laser Rifles, and only four casualties, and I captured a commander as well. (How on earth my recruits survived taking down half the ship with stun rods and one Small Launcher is anyone's guess.)

I don't think it matters, that was pretty on-topic.

So how do you go about with initial startup? I downloaded XCOM 1 to try it out, but All I've accomplished is smashing a bunch of aliens. Most of my 8 starters are dead, and I'm not sure how 'research and manufacturing' works.

It can be come down to play style.

Personally, I start cracking on laser weapon ASAP, sell the engineers by a missile tank and more science dudes.

I add a large radar and start making my primary base a more defensive position. Then play by ear for what I need.

I do usually take the rather extensive effort to rebuild the original base, with all the hangers up top for better invasion defense.  My first research and construction is medkits, shockingly enough.  While losing squadies left and right is the normal X-COM way, watching a guy get wounded and then die a coupld turns later is just insulting after whatever heroics they pull off while leaking out.

Of course, without armor, the first shot usually puts them down anyway.  Point is, don't get attached to anybody until you have power-armored veterans.

And even then people die.  They always die.  That's X-Com.  Savescumming whenever one of my favorites died was how I killed my best game of X-Com.  It got all crazy, just as I was getting sick of playing the same missions over and over.

For the record though, one of my main squad members was a veteran from the starting batch of soldiers.  He made it all the way to Ethereal Terror Missions.  There were also several from the first set I bought.

Unfortunately on said Ethereal Terror Mission, I found out too late that my blaster launcher guy had 1 psi resistance.  :|
