But there's water RIGHT THERE!
« on: February 14, 2010, 07:16:39 pm »

Soooo...

After embarking near a river (like I always do) and discovering it's infested with carp (like it usually is) I created a couple of indoor filtered lakes for my dorfs to drink from.  I then zoned them and designated them as water sources.  and then I noticed something.  Work at my fort was proceeding at the slowest rate ever.  I had plenty of booze, and my dwarves SEEMED mostly happy, so why was it taking so long to get stuff done?  I went to the top of my fort and noticed a path had been worn into the ground going offscreen.  I followed it and found that my dwarves had been crossing the map to drink out of the river.  Any advice? i'm sick of them taking 15 minutes to drink, and worried that when sieges come a lot of my dwarves will be away from the fort.

Is the alchohol blocked in any way?

Do you have enough variety?

Set a water source zone, and set 'zone only' drinking.

Also, MOAR BOOZE! They won't NEED to drink water if they're nice and drunk.
They only need it to pour over the injured.

Sounds like your water sources either aren't zoned properly, or are too shallow.  You need to designate the shore next to the water, not the water itself.  And the water needs to be at least 4/7.

Also don't be afraid to designate the entire length of the river (and both its shores) as "restricted zones" for pathing so they only go near it if they absolutely have to.

I don;t have a lot of booze , just what I can brew from plump helmets.  Haven't been able to buy stuff like seeds from caravans, they've all bypassed my site (even the elven ones) because of the forest. working on a road right now so hopefully that will help.

the water's definitely deep enough, so it can't be that.

how would I go about forbidding the zones again? I didn't see it in the (i) menu...

d>o>r

and if you're stuck waiting for caravans, harvest some crap from the wild! it's not as dwarfily delicious as some fermented cave wheat, but whip wine and tuber beer have their merits.  If you have to, set up a farm outside (or dig out a skylight so a part of inside can be "outside") and start farming those sun-drinking plants (and then brew them)

After you set up the drinking zones, go to  o->z for the Orders Menu then "Zones" Submenu. One of the options is in there for "zone-only drinking" and "zone-only fishing".

And to restrict the river (and its banks, don't forget the banks or the carp will eat you) is the d->o->r of which the above fellow mentioned.

You only have wine?  I think that dorfs will stop drinking booze in protest if you only have 1 type.

From the wiki:

Urist McSwiller: Why is there only ale?

Urist McManager: Because we only grow pig tails here!

Urist McSwiller: By Armok and all that's dwarvenly, I now take this pledge... Unless I taste some other alcohol, I would sooner drink water than yet another ale, even if it means slowing this fortress to a grinding halt and the death of everyone inside it!

Also, much scarier if literally clowns.

I have only wine and it's ok. The only problem is a minor unhappy thought.

Don't get the wiki literally.

ok, thanks for the help.  a caravan just came and I got some wild strawberry seeds, so that should help with the booze crisis ( i'm running out, that's part of the problem) and I ordered my brew master to stop carrying chairs around.  Now If i can just get my fisherdwarfs to stop fishing in carp-infested water and get my engraver that plant fiber he wants, I should be good.

make sure to go into your kitchen menu. if you start making meals and you don't tinker around in there - your dwarves will take those seeds and boil them in your booze

Seeds are not cooked by default, but the booze is.

I just like to point this out in threads that reference 'restricted':  It does NOT keep dwarves out of there.  It doesn't forbid them from entering or doing stuff in that region.  All it does is, if your dwarves have to walk to some other place, they will -prefer- to enter higher-traffic, non-restricted areas along the way...but if they don't have a choice, they'll still go there.

slightly not related: why water can't be embarked at start or bought from caravans? Can this be modded?
