Playing Multiple towns in a dwarven kingdom (on the same map)
« on: February 14, 2010, 07:05:34 pm »

(Note: easier with burrows implemented).

Seems like a decent enough thing to do to me. Different areas of the same map might have different uses. Stoney mountain areas could be more for stone quarrying and perhaps mining (as would a separate, deep underground town area). Forested areas would provide wood, (also possible to have an area centered in a dwarven made underground forest. Lake areas provide fishing and soil of course brings to mind farming.

Defense is more difficult when things are spread out, but that's kind of the idea.

Ideas, questions, comments?

This would be much more fun with the county arc implemented.

I agree entirely, but until then....

It's entirely possible with enough dorf.  Build up a central area around either your farming/mining operation, and build corridors leading out of one area and into another.  Several small military huts spread out across the map (Using 2-level walls and flooring the above, placing beds in each hut) should make short work of sieges, but this sort of thing should wait until you have a very good grasp of your central operation.  If you do manage to build such an extensive network, show us the results in Visual Fortress.

tl;dr:  I fully endorse the attempt.

Does anyone else see DF as those Italian or Greek cities crammed onto cliffs? Just curious.

Also, how do I get my civ to take over my abandoned forts when i leave?

I actually attempted that once. Had to abandon it for reasons I no longer remember. Alternately, I once dug niches in the side of a chasm and filled them with coffins. Sort of a multi-level necropolis.

Oh. From what I'm aware you need the king to come to your fortress. It will then run itself after abandonment.
Again, from what I'm aware.

For me they always leave the fort and go into another mountain hall. Maybe there're exceptions.

This is the first time I've heard anything like this - everything else I have read says that abandoned fortress = DEAD fortress.  I would LOVE this to be the case, but I sincerely doubt it.  Anybody else able to back this guy up?

I have heard this on another thread. I would like some backup too. I will look in the wiki now.
