RTS with a good story/campaign?
« on: February 13, 2010, 08:23:35 pm »

So, I'm looking for a real time strategy game with a really good story/campaign mode. I thought about Supreme Commander but I played through the original game on a friend's copy of the game so I'd mainly be playing for the expansion campaign and I honestly don't remember if the story was even good. So, suggestions? I don't really care about the setting/genre as long as the story's good.

Edit: Thought I'd add some games I've played. You don't have to use these as a base for suggestions, I'm just including them so you know what I've already played.
Starcraft, Warcraft 2 & 3 + expansions, Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic, Age of Empires 2 & 3, some of Age of Mythology, Supreme Commander, Company of Heroes, Black and White 1 & some of 2, and definitely others I can't remember.

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

Homeworld and Sword of the Stars, the former especially. Or at least I hear.

Majesty, kind of? You don't control your units directly (they're heroes that wander the land), but you do place buildings strategically, manage the economy, cast spells, and set bounties that effectively direct your heroes.

Or Dark Crusade, for that matter.

On that note, Sins of a Solar Empire, though I don't actually know if the story is any good, but I've heard nothing but good things about the game.

Sins of a Solar Empire is good, although the story isn't really existent; similar to how each session of 'Civilization' is its own story.

Has anyone else ever played 'Submarine Titans?' I absolutely loved that game!

Oh I forgot I've played Majesty and Majesty 2. I've seen Homeworld and Dawn of War mentioned a couple times so I'll probably look into them. It looks like people think the first Dawn of War's worth looking at but maybe not the expansions?

Any RTS with skirmish mode so I can make up a story as I play.  :P

Sword of the Stars isn't an RTS but it is awesome though.

Dark Crusade has less storyline but the the gameplay is better.

Well, if you're okay with turn based strat games, which aren't particularly what you are looking for but still, give Wesnoth a try.

Specifically, I'd reccomend the Under the Burning Suns and Bad Moon campaigns, and there's another one... (South Guard maybe?) that's pretty damn good as well..

Yeah I played Wesnoth quite a bit a couple of weeks ago, but I'm a little tired of it. I'll definitely go back at some point and have a look at those campaigns though after I get a break with a different game.
