My current computer is really terrible. Can anyone suggest some text games, like roguelikes or something, that use very few resources? I don't really like roguelikes, though; I die too much. And it gets kind of boring.

Ever tried a MUD / MOO / MUSH? Those are extremely entertaining, incite the imagination, and are completely text-based. They're online as well. Though, if you're not into Role Playing, it's not a good option, even though you CAN just Roleplay someone who doesn't talk to anyone .

There are a few that are non-RP, but those aren't nearly as popular as the ones that encourage RP.

Other than that, you could always Google ASCII games or text-based games, and make sure to add -roguelike.

There is a very powerful search engine in which you can specify exactly what type you want, but of course, with every engine, if you make it too exact, you might not get anything, and get a "recommended" list instead. It also depends entirely on what the person that uploaded the link to their server put as it's tags.

Nevermind that, I'm dense. I simply put "game" after it and lo and behold, results! This looks interesting, but I don't think Cheddarius wants a Roguelike.

I've tried some MUDS and such - LostChaos, HellMOO. HellMOO was totally insane. LostChaos was fun but too grindy.
I tried IVAN. I didn't like it very much, it was too hard and not grindy enough.

I second roleplaying MUSHes and MUCKs and stuff.  MUDs can be fun (my favorite is RetroMUD), but MUSHes build a real tight-knit storytelling community that can be pretty neat.  I pretty much got through my childhood on them.

Oo, yea Interactive Fiction stories are great. I've been playing Hitcher Hiker Guide for years, and still never beaten it.

I second Mushes and Mucks. I've had a group that I've travel from mu* to mu* for five years, and made really good long term friends via role playing with them.

There Bleach: The Beginning, faction base role play rolled combat systems. Its my friend mu*, and Naruto Mush Rivalry, the mu* I was the Owner, and created, though no longer playing or staffing there. Both can be found on MudConnector

LOTS of Mushes and Mucks. There Teen Ager from Outer Space Muck, that been going on close to ten years, based on the same role playing game of the same name. You can find Mu*s for every genre, and most popular franchises.

There also plethora unique and original mu*s as well.

Most are friendly open community with none idiots being very common.

Most clients are free, and not resource intensive. Mudconnect has a selection of clients, or you can ask here. I'm not to sure about cleints for window 7, most should run fine on vista and older operating systems.

MUXes and all that stuff are better when you have a lot of time. I'm currently playing FiranMUX, and it's dangerously addicting.

Interactive Fiction, like others have said...but I think also some older games that run on DOSBox worked well for my old laptop. Abandonware and that kind of thing.

Classic IF

You can play some of the classic Infocom games online here
I wish they had A Mind Forever Voyaging on that list of playable games, that was a good one. You can also find some Infocom games floating around on the internet for download, though I doubt it's legal or whatever. A handful of Infocom games these days are decent, most of them are pretty stale these days though, like Zork.

Modern IF

Handful of good modern interactive fiction. You can search Baf's Guide to find anything else you might be interested in.
